How do you keep your house clean?!

So I am amazed at all the people that manage to keep every single room in their house perfectly clean at all times!

i feel like I am constantly cleaning and the house is always in chaos. I just don’t know how anyone manages?? I want you to tell me how do you do it?

I have one day a week dedicated to doing a huge cleaning and in the evenings I pick everything off the floor, hoover, clean surfaces, empty dishwasher, fold clothes. In the mornings and midday I run the robotic hoover as well to keep the dog hairs off.

i just wish there wasn’t so much cleaning to do. I just don’t feel like the house is ever sparkling clean in every room at the same time. It’s just too much work.

Don’t have kids lol
we got rid of a lot of ‘stuff’
if we hadn’t used it,worn it,read it or loved it-to the charity shop it went
we give the bathroom a wipe down twice a week, kitchen daily and hoover round
dont put something down-put it away

my house isn’t clean and tidy 24/7 but it’s clean and tidy enough the bulk of the time

there are people on insta that show you how to break tasks down enough so it’s not a chore

I break it down into 4 jobs over 4 days. Bathrooms one day, dust and hoover upstairs another, dust and hoover down another, kitchen another.

Streamline possessions, be brutal. If it's not used, it goes.
Don't buy anything unless essential.
Storage is key - a place for everything and everything in its place.
Kids have to learn to tidy up - making a mess is ok but they have to tidy up before moving on to next activity.
Strict routine with cleaning. I do upstairs deep clean once a week, downstairs deep clean on another day. I hoover through daily though and washing is about 2 loads daily.
Meal planning and clean as you go.

Thanks for all the messages. I think separating a deep clean for upstairs and downstairs might be the way to go as it’s so much to deep clean in one day!

I also wash towels one set day, and bedding another set day.
Then the dishwasher goes on twice a day, washing machine usually goes on once a day. I also keep an eye on the fridge contents, and cook what’s going off, or freeze it.

I spend half an hour each evening cleaning when the kids are in bed.

Also DH does the cooking and cleaning when he's not at work which helps.

Do you have any help?

Either you have a team of people making mess or your expectations are too high.

Cleaner. We have a five bed / three storey / three bathroom house. It takes two school days for me to clean it thoroughly, we have cleaners in four hours a week and they do a brilliant job.

LongStoryShorty · 19/09/2022 17:00

We used to have a cleaner but she wouldn’t complete a whole room 100% but rather do a quick sweep everywhere. When I clean myself I get to every little corner, but it does take so long. And now I find having a cleaner pretty expensive as well, I would rather save that of money for a holiday/ deposit on a holiday home.

My eldest is 5 and she knows how to put the toys away, and does it very kindly when I ask her. Do your 5year olds clean more than that? Sometimes if I’m cleaning she’ll come and swipe doors etc with me, wash floors, helps load/ unload dishwasher, was using her toy iron to iron sheets but I mean she wouldn’t really be able to complete the tasks fully.

my husband is around on weekends and does clean, ie take trash out, put dishes in dishwasher, hoover, clean fridge etc.

i have a friend who keep her house spotless all the time, but I feel i clean loads but it’s just never spotless, at least not all over the house at the same time. There’s ALWAYS something that needs doing.

I haven't managed to achieve it either OP, but judging the people I know who do manage it, they have minimal possessions. You need to go on a massive cull of stuff (which is time consuming in itself), then it takes no time to quickly tidy the few possessions you have left. The cleaning is then also quick because there is little to move to clean under/around, no nick nacks to dust etc.

MolliciousIntent · 19/09/2022 18:59

You've got a dog, and kids. Your house will never be spotlessly clean.

ChicagoBears · 19/09/2022 19:01

Cleaner twice a week and I clean and tidy every single day (only 20 minutes) and that keeps everything in check.

I insist on DC putting away toys every single night and always make sure bathrooms have been flushed and bleached before bed.

Also have a sort out every 3 months of clothes, toys etc and we take them to the charity shop else we’d be inundated with clutter.

savemeagin · 19/09/2022 19:21

Decent storage helps me as we always seem to have junk - so a box in the kitchen for all the kids pictures, vouchers, nic nak's etc, another by the front door for all opened/not yet opened mail. Baskets for toys for the kids. A separate wash bin for the DCs by the main bathroom. I also close down rooms we don't often use, spare bedroom/dining room etc so these stay tidy most of the time. DC1 has jobs he must do in order to receive his pocket money. I tidy whilst DH cooks. If he's away, I close down even more of the house and always tidy once DCs are in their rooms for the night. Because of DDog - I have to hoover once a day.
We work full time and DC are at school, so I guess we're not always in to make that much of a mess.
