So grumpy when woken from nap

DS (21 months) is horrible after his nap and it takes a while for him to get back to ‘normal.’ It really limits our afternoons.

Does it mean I should be looking to drop it and have an earlier bedtime?

I used to have to wake my DD from her nap because she would nap for ages and then have split nights (and overall have far less sleep!). Others will say not to wake him but I understand why you might need to! For his sake and yours.

DD was also miserable after being woken. I would let her sleep til 2.30 at the latest, longer if she was unwell (as then she needed the sleep). We would have dinner at 5pm so afternoons were a bit of a write off anyway as by the time she was ready to go anywhere it was nearly time to put tea on. Generally stayed at home in the afternoon because of all this but usually got out in the morning.

I found when I woke her that giving her lots of cuddles, a cup of milk and a biscuit, and have some telly or stories while she ‘came round’ helped. On days we absolutely had to get out in the afternoon I found the quicker we got out the better. She would be hysterical in the house and then we’d get out in the pram or car and she would be distracted so it was okay.

Thanks, yes DS is the same, I honestly think he’d sleep four hours or more if I didn’t wake him!

My daughter is like this when she wakes from her naps (think she gets it from me!) the only thing that helps her come round is a snack pretty much as soon as she wakes up doesn’t have to be big just something to distract and snap her out of the howling. Just a few cut up strawberries or an apple etc.

One of my brothers was like this as a toddler and it turns out he was waking up thirsty. Basically you had to plug in a cup of water/juice as soon as he woke, if you delayed in any way he worked himself up into toddler rage and wouldn't accept a drink no way no how! A nice big drink though and he was good as gold.

Same as MotherofDragons here. My son was an absolute nightmare waking from his nap and the only thing that helped was charging in with a sweet tasting snack before he got too worked up. The apple is much healthier than my solution, which was a chocolate button and on one notable and desperate occasion, a teaspoon of jam ….😳
