Do your children wash their hands before every meal?

We definitely did as kids and thinking I am too lax with mine. They wash their hands when coming in from outside and after the loo but that's it.

After just seeing a thread about worms I'm now a bit worried that my baby ate her dinner with her hands after playing with her big sister's toys and crawling around the floor all afternoon. Barf.

Is it just us?

No
They are washed after the toilet and if they've visible dirt on and if preparing food or have emptied the bins, etc

MiniDinosaur · 16/09/2022 19:50

No, and they’ve made it to teenagerhood with virtually no stomach upsets.

30hourschildcare · 16/09/2022 19:51

Only if we are out somewhere. Otherwise they wash when they come home, after the toilet, or after visible dirt.

And I am a bit of a germaphobe!!

No, only if their hands are visibly mucky or I’ve got an inkling the littlest one has been taking round her nappy.

Recycledcurtains · 16/09/2022 19:52

Nope. After the loo, that’s about it. Not even if they’ve been outside unless they are literally caked in mud.

ThisUserNameIsAvailableOk · 16/09/2022 19:53

Yes! Always wash their hands before they eat. Why wouldn't you? 🤢

cheeseandpeanutbutter · 16/09/2022 19:55

Yes always. Just a good habit to get into.

Lovemusic33 · 16/09/2022 19:56

No 😬, they have survived (now 18 and 16), we spend a lot of time outside and they have eaten with dirty hands with no ill effect, they are hardly ever ill.

MonkeyPuddle · 16/09/2022 19:57

Because they use cutlery and there’s nowt wrong with a bit of exposure to bugs.

Ahf22 · 16/09/2022 19:59

Yes. It’s how I was brought up and it’s second nature now so a great habit to instil in them whilst young. Of course you’ll meet resistance but no-one said it would be easy.

or you could not bother… your choice.

Cuppaand2biscuits · 16/09/2022 19:59

No, and I'd be very surprised if mine wash them every time they've used the loo!
Never have tummy upsets and are pre teens now so can't be too harmful!

siblingrevelryagain · 16/09/2022 20:00

No, 3 teenage DC here and never any of them/us had worms and generally very robust & healthy (allergy and bugs-wise). Wash after loo but not before meals unless been outside in dirt

Rutland2022 · 16/09/2022 20:02

No. DD eats breakfast in my stable and shares it with the dogs and horses. Handwashing isn’t something we do a lot of. But nursery are hot on doing it before all meals!

VladmirsPoutine · 16/09/2022 20:02

Yes (my nieces and nephews). And also when arriving home. Showers daily too. Cleanliness is very important to us.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 16/09/2022 20:12

No, I wasn't brought up doing it so it didn't occur to me to get them to. They do after using the loo or being in the chicken run though.

mackthepony · 16/09/2022 20:15

They wash them :

Whenever they come into the house from being 'out'
Before meals
Most of the time when they come in from the park etc

I'm fastidious when it comes to hands

Hayegernz · 16/09/2022 20:38

Phew OK at least it's not just us! That's roughly 35% yes/65% no.

Weirdly I'm a bit of a germophobe actually so I'm very fastidious with it when coming from the outside and after the loo, but I assumed the house to otherwise be a bit of a 'safe zone' so hadn't thought to get then to wash their hands when going from playing inside to eating food.

Love that your children are robust with barely any sickness bugs and no worms despite not washing their hands. #LifeGoals :D Hope it works out this way for my little ones!

Yes always and as soon as they come in from being outside too.

DontTouchThat · 16/09/2022 21:42

Yes, every time. Because the grotty buggers keep bringing threadworms into the house.

Like this for our family too.

BonesOfWhatYouBelieve · 16/09/2022 21:45

Nope, just if visibly dirty or after going to the loo.

Whyisitsodifficult · 16/09/2022 21:45

Yes!

Mumof3girlsandaboy · 16/09/2022 21:47

Yes

moneybeingwasted · 16/09/2022 21:47

Nope…only after using the loo. All adults now and they never had sickness bugs !

abovedecknotbelow · 16/09/2022 21:48

Toilet out and before eating!
