Did your baby drop night feeds on their own or with nightweaning?

Just curious and if anyone has any advice, all ears! Dc1 dropped night feeds on her own. Dc2 is 8 months and still has 2 night feeds. Both bf. How likely is it that he will drop them on his own? I feel like he will need a nudge to drop one. Any stories? Thanks.

Both on their own at 11 months and 15 months. Not against night weaning if you need it to be sooner.

On their own for actual "feeds". Night weaned from comfort suckles at just under two as I was fed up Grin

Many babies need to feed at night until a year or more. DS started sleeping through by himself at 19 months, so dropped night feeds by default of not waking for them

Both of mine on their own, daughter at 12 months, son at 14 months (a joyous day 😂). My son occasionally still wakes but is easily settled with a wee shhh or pat

I nightweaned at 10m - DD was waking for a breastfeed every 3 hours and I felt pretty confident she was only waking out of habit and not hunger. My reasoning was if she was actually hungry it wouldn't work. I decided to give it 3 nights and if she was still waking frequently after that then I'd go back to feeding her. First night was miserable, with so much wailing, and the second night she slept 7-7 and has done ever since.

Mamai90 · 16/09/2022 23:45

DD still has one (usually) at 10 months, she was on 2 up until around 9 months but dropped it naturally and I think she might be well on the way to cutting it to zero.

I was given plenty of advice to give water etc but if my baby was hungry I was going to feed her.

All stopped themselves at 11m, 7 m and just before 4 th birthday.

Clearly against the trend but did "Ferber" both of mine at 4-5 months, and literally only took 1 night for both of them, after which they both slept through and were entirely happy...now mid 20s and don't seem traumatised by the experience, nor were they since the day after just 1 fairly tricky night

shivawn · 17/09/2022 01:50

Mine dropped them on his own, he reintroduced a 6:30am one last month though. I'm usually awake myself at that time anyway so I'm not too fussed about trying to wean it.

MGee123 · 17/09/2022 06:19

On their own at about 7 months when we swapped to formula in the daytime

wishing3 · 17/09/2022 06:21

Mine is 21 months and still having a few feeds a night. Next time I think I’ll try to wean earlier.

ChildWontStopGrowing · 17/09/2022 21:18

Bit of gentle encouragement to go back to sleep without milk (this was at 8 months; he was waking almost hourly), then after a few days he was waking less. I did feed if he wouldn't settle. It was very soon after this that he stopped waking for milk at night at all

PinkPlantCase · 17/09/2022 21:26

Dropped night feeds on his own, inconsistently at 11 months and more consistently now at 15 months

Terriblethirtytwos · 17/09/2022 21:34

I night weaned DD1 at 8 months. She was waking 2-3 times a night for the tiniest feeds. She slept through for a while after that.. this thread hasn’t given me much hope for DD2! She is five months and feeds twice a night. I was kind of hoping she would just stop by herself... tonight would be nice, or tomorrow.

espresso14 · 17/09/2022 21:38

Mine would not drop on their own, I think I nightweaned about 16 months or something, I'd had enough. I used "biscuit" method. Initially, they got offered an oatie or some other nice biscuit, which was accepted over milk, and then biscuit got downgraded over a couple of steps to a cream cracker. By that stage, they accepted they didn't really want a cracker, and just went back to sleep instead of having milk (NB does leave crumbs in the bed). Unfortunately, nightweaning didn't stop night waking!

RedRobyn2021 · 17/09/2022 21:42

8 months is very young to stop night feeds, I'm sure that's against advice? Isn't it advised to wait until a minimum of a year? Breast milk/formula is still their main food source

My daughter this 19 months and still wakes, she definitely doesn't wake because she's hungry, but it's the easiest way to send her back to sleep

LionessesRules · 17/09/2022 21:46

I stopped feeding DS1 at night when it didn't send him to sleep at 9 months. He didn't sleep through for several more years.

DS2 dropped them by himself, also around 9 months, I think. And slept through from that point.

No. Physiologically the majority of babies have the capacity to not feed overnight from around 6 months. Obviously no one has to night wean but there is no harm in doing so, so long as daytime intake is sufficient and weight continues to increase appropriately. Personally I'd rather that than 19 months of interrupted sleep!
