4 month old doesn't respond to mum's voice?

Just wondering as a FTM if this is normal. His hearing is fine, wakes at the slightest sound when sleeping / jumps at loud noises etc. When I'm talking and playing with him face to face he smiles / babbles etc as he does with everyone else.

I just noticed earlier today he doesn't turn to my voice. I went into the living room after being upstairs for an hour or so. I called to him as I entered; he was playing on his playmat and he didn't attempt to look or respond at all. This evening, he was laying on the bed watching his projector on the ceiling - it doesn't make any noise so the room was quiet. I lay next to him and spoke to him / said his name / made funny noises etc. and he totally ignored me and turned to face away from me and stopped watching the projector.

He doesn't calm with my voice either when crying. He needs to be rocked and held. I'm not particularly worried about it as he's so young just wondered if it was normal for a 4 month old to not really care about their mums presence in a room or her voice? TIA

Sorry OP I’m not sure but bumping for you

Is he in any distress at all? You could ring hv for a chat to see what they say. If it's not a hearing issue it may be a case of seeing how communication develops over time. Does he respond if he's face on and your giving him attention, does he react to toys/food?

CinnamonHamster · 16/09/2022 08:08

He has reflux and isn't a great sleeper but isn't in distress as such. He responds brilliantly face on watching my face and mouth, smiling/laughing, cooing/babbling and reacts to toys/food/tv/trees/other people on walks etc. Just seems if the sound isn't linked to a visual he doesn't register it (unless it's very loud in which case he'll startle but that's it). Xx

Maybe he’s over stimulated and can only concentrate on one thing at a time. Ie his playmat and the projector.
i was worried about my som’s hearing, turns out he was so focused on what he was doing. Now he can hear the rustle if a crisp packet from faaar away 😂

at 4 months physical contact is much better than a voice when it comes to soothing baby.

CinnamonHamster · 16/09/2022 10:45

@Danikm151 he does get really engrossed in things sometimes so maybe that's all it is. Glad your son is doing so well! They get you so worried haha

Any update? Going through something similar and worried

CinnamonHamster · 16/03/2023 14:42

Hi @Sonorus we're still not great with communication getting assessed next week! Hitting all motor skill milestones but still no babbling etc.

Wondering how your little one is. I know a month isn’t loads but a lot can change.

CinnamonHamster · 07/05/2023 12:56

Hi! He is now one and still no babbling. Just lots of screaming and shouting - we've seen Paediatrics who have referred us to ENT to check hearing / throat etc in more depth.

Saiaryal24 · 07/10/2024 19:37

@CinnamonHamster is there any update with your baby’s assessment? My daughter is 5month old and exactly like you described.Could you please let know about the update please.I am worring to the extreme that i stoped sleeping and eating at all.. Praying for your baby.

CinnamonHamster · 07/10/2024 20:09

@Saiaryal24 hi! So, my little boy ended up having enlarged adenoids and tonsils. This ended up causing pressure on the tubes that lead to his ears meaning he couldn't always hear well! Most of the time now he is fine, but when it's Winter or he has a cold or is congested, his hearing goes bad again. He is still being seen by ENT doctors for treatments to help with this.

He has some speech delays as he finds it hard to mimic sounds (because he can't hear them always) but is otherwise doing brilliantly. I hope all turns out well for your baby! ❤️
