10 week old baby constipated - HELP!

19 replies

TeddyHunters · 14/09/2022 19:18

Our 10 week old baby is constipated and seems in a lot of discomfort. She had her jabs last Thursday and has only done 2 extremely runny poos since.
Usually she would poo a few times a day in her nappy and they were normal ones. But now she seems in a lot of pain.
We've given her a bath and a tummy massage. She's passed wind several times.
Not really sure what to do, or what to give her.
We've done the leg bicycle movements. But most of the time she's screaming crying. She's finally just dozed off but she could literally wake up screaming any minute...!
Any advice??

I did a lot of baby massage and warm baths! Also Gripe water helped us xx

@Ilikeanimalsmorethanpeople
We were thinking of gripe water. It says online it can cause constipation so we weren't sure whether to get it..!

Try to get some lactulose, that helped my daughter. I had to go to a midnight boots pharmacy.

Call your gp who may authorise the use of water. I know babies shouldn't have water but my baby was constipated and the gp suggested no more than 10mls after a feed for one day but no more than 1oz in a day. It done the trick.

Ilikeanimalsmorethanpeople · 14/09/2022 21:50

@TeddyHunters I do think it worked for us at that stage anything was worth a shot, I also gave her a tiny bit of pure orange juice which worked.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 14/09/2022 21:52

Lactulose from the GP I'd say.

But if she's done runny poos are you sure she is constipated? Maybe there's just not much to poop out? Maybe it's just wind as that can be excruciating.

TeddyHunters · 14/09/2022 22:13

@Hungrycaterpillarsmummy
She's done 2 since Thursday and they were mega runny and like an explosion. But then nothing. Usually she does around 4 small dirty nappies each day. I think there must be wind as I can feel her tummy gurgling.

A friend mentioned pure orange juice. Do you know how much you're supposed to give? I'm sure our friend was advice 1ml? I think they gave it using a syringe.

Please don't give her orange juice.
Is she breast or bottle fed?

TeddyHunters · 14/09/2022 22:45

@MrsPatrickDempsey
She's mainly breastfed (through expressing) but she has been having 2 bottles of formula per day for the last couple of weeks as my breast milk supply was quite low for a bit. So she has both at the moment.

I was always taught that constipation describes the texture of poo; not the frequency. You probably know that it's really common for breastfed babies to have infrequent bowel movements so as long as it's soft and yellow I wouldn't worry. Their immature tummies can be affected by the rota virus component of the vaccines.

Janedoe82 · 14/09/2022 22:56

If she is getting plenty of breast milk unlikely to be constipated- and as above breast fed babies can go a few days without a poo.
I would rub her tummy, lots of cuddles and try and reduce the formula.

FantasylandEnthusiast · 14/09/2022 23:02

Warm cotton pad and gently wipe around her bum - it stimulates then to go. Worked everytime for me!

ohfourfoxache · 14/09/2022 23:02

Infacol before feeds (reduces the amount of wind going through her system)

Could try 1tsp dark brown sugar, dissolve in boiling water, let it cool - then use a syringe to get it into her. Lactulose is probably better though

Tummy rubs (use baby oil) and bum pats to encourage the wind out

TeddyHunters · 15/09/2022 12:22

Thank you all for these tips!
We've been to the chemist and the pharmacist gave lactulose as well.
Would you say calpol for the pain?
She's also had infacol in the past but didn't get that this time as the pharmacist said lactulose.
She's just had a dose now

Just to say op, both my boys went through phases of not pooping for 3 weeks and they werent constipated. I think if they are doing a lot of growing there is really not much waste at all and if she is weeing a lot then it may be ok.
But you know your baby so trust your, ahem, gut!

snoodles · 16/09/2022 09:49

A little cool boiled water can help. Literally a teaspoon at a time. A warm bath can help too.

Perhaps the formula doesn't agree with her and you could try a different one - depends on the colour of the poo.

IrmaGord · 16/09/2022 09:57

My DS is now 18 but when he was about 6-8 weeks old we had the same problem. The HV suggested a little bit of cooled boiled water with a drop of orange juice in it. It worked and I've never seen such a look of relief on a baby's face.

goodenoughmum88 · 16/09/2022 09:58

If she’s breastfed try drinking a pint of cloudy apple juice. Used to go through me and straight to my LO and he’d have a massive poo within 12 hours!!! May not work for everyone though. Of course if that fails you could try drinking prune juice….but I’d go Apple first. Just prepare for the poonami afterwards.

hope they go soon, it’s horrible seeing them so uncomfortable…and being trapped under them as they do the really stinky farts is grim!
