Tongue tie

My baby was diagnosed with tongue tie today. He was diagnosed by Katherine Fisher in South London. Does anyone have any experience with the procedure and if so, how was the aftercare? If you're from Bromley/South London where did you get the procedure done? How did your baby recover? Did breastfeeding improve? Any experience is appreciated. Thank you x

Not from London but my baby was diagnosed with quite a severe tongue tie after birth. We were referred to get it snipped, it took about 7 weeks for our appointment with the NHS.

Breastfeeding until then was horrendous, particularly on one side where my nipple had basically been destroyed by her.

The infant feeding team and lactation specialists came out multiple times to see me and confirmed I had her latched correctly, it was the tongue tie that was causing the nipple destruction and agony.

After my nipple healed and after her tongue tie was snipped, it was much less painful and then not painful at all after a week or so once she got accustomed to her new range of tongue movement.

In terms of the procedure, I just held her, the doctor put his finger in her mouth and pressed down to make her tongue lift, and got some tiny scissors and just snipped the skin under the tongue in one motion.

She cried obviously and there was some blood. It looked like there was more blood because it mixed with her saliva.

I went into a room immediately after and breastfed her for 15 minutes or so and she was fine. Fell asleep in the car on the way home. No issues at all after

She has refused a bottle and a dummy since the tie was snipped. Before it was snipped she occasionally had a bottle of expressed breast milk whilst my battered nipple healed. She took to the dummy at about 4 weeks old too

Shes nearly 8 months now. Still Breastfeeding. No dummy and no bottle because she still refuses them, but to be honest I'm quite happy about her not being reliant on a dummy anyway.

Good luck! I would say go for it if you think its best. The pain is over and done with in a minute

Also not London but my DD had a tongue tie snipped at 3 weeks. The procedure was quick and simple. She cried for a couple of seconds so I quickly fed her and she stopped. There was no aftercare that I can remember. It can take a while to learn how to use the tongue properly. DD didn't put on much weight immediately after the snip but a week later she put on loads in one week. I paid for two sessions of cranial osteopathy as it was supposed to help with relaxing the tongue muscles. No idea if it had any effect but she seemed to enjoy it!

I'm in North Wales. My son was diagnosed privately with a posterior tt, I was petrified of the snip but he genuinely cried for a second and soon as I fed him he stopped, barely any blood either. Just to warn you though breastfeeding did not improve for me and was still painful until 16 weeks! I'm only telling you this because I'd read so many people say g they felt an instant relief and so I was disheartened... I did continue to bfeed for 16 months though so not all is lost :)

Diagnosed by the LC at the children's centre breastfeeding group. Seen by King's 2 weeks later to have it snipped.

Best thing we did!

Not London but had DD's snipped at about 4 weeks. It was very quick, and it was definitely worth getting done. Made a big difference to BF.

@Pinkflipflop85

Hi my DDs TTs were both diagnosed by a lactation consultant and then snipped privately by this surgeon. I think we saw him at Kingston but he also works out of various other SW London/Surrey hospitals. No wait as private.

minipie · 08/09/2022 23:45

Oh and in both cases it made a huge difference to feeding, although with DD1 it took a few days to see the difference as it wasn’t snipped till about 14 weeks.

Procedure itself was very quick, over in seconds. No aftercare as such.

My ds was 3 days old and it was very quick and helped him latch immediately. It was a specialist dentist.
I was an arsehole and couldn't stand to watch pfb having procedure so left dh to it. In the waiting room a woman arrived with her autistic son that needed to be at this dentist. I got a sharp shock of perspective right there and realised my son having this wee procedure was nothing really.

DD had a severe posterior tie which was missed by several midwives, doctors and health visitors despite us raising our concerns on the day she was born (they run in the family on DH side).
Feeding was awful to begin with. She fed continiously and wasnt satisfied. I was told it was normal cluster feeding on so many occasions. I had NHS lactation consultants out who said her latch was perfect and a health visitor tell me I wasnt making enough effort to feed her as she was dropping weight quickly and barely gaining.

In the end we searched for a private midwife/lactation consultant who specialised with tongue tie.
A lovely lady visited us at home. Asked lots of questions and examined DD. she found a severe posterior tie and snipped it immediately with her swaddled on my living room floor.
She let out one cry, a little bit of blood but then latched and fed well.
We were given some exercises to gelp her start moving ger tongue and prevent any reattachment.
Sadly our breastfeeding journey didnt go to plan and we had to combination feed due to me not producing enough milk but thats a different story.
We are based in SE London.
