Is the tap water in Greece safe for babies?

Traveling to Greece tomorrow with 11 month old DS and just crossed my mind whether the tap water there is safe for baby, or should I buy bottled water? If so does anyone know which one as I know some of them are high in sodium. He still has x2 bottles which we will need water for and regularly drinks water out of his sippy cut throughout the day.

I'm not a baby (clearly) and i would not consider drinking tap water in Greece. I definately would not give it to young children

TabithaTittlemouse · 08/09/2022 15:40

I wouldn’t.

It's fine to drink, but it has a very high mineral content, which can a) make it taste and look a bit peculiar, and b) upset your tummy a bit until it gets used to it. So I wouldn't give it to a baby, as they have sensitive little tummies to begin with.

The water in Greece is safe to drink but as it has different minerals its recommended to use bottled water. That's goes for adults too!

I thought you couldn't drink the tap water in Greece at all.

I'm basing this on a very drunken girls holiday years ago when we used to chuck away the ice cubes in our vodka lemos.

Depends where you're going- on the islands make sure you get bottled water. You can always boil it and let it cool.
On the mainland, tap water is perfectly safe.

No use bottled water and be safe, OK for washing and cooking

Angeldelight21 · 08/09/2022 21:00

Hi Op, on mainland the tapwater is fine, on islands is not.

Biscuitandacuppa · 08/09/2022 21:02

No use bottled because of the risk of diarrhoea and the effects in a baby of dehydration far faster than an adult.

Thanks all, will buy bottled water and use that for him. Will be sterilising his bottles in the sink at night with the Milton tablets, will tap water be ok for that?

We had a holiday in Crete this year, and was pleasantly surprised to see just how cheap bottled water is over there €1.80 for 6 1.5 litre bottles for example. We did eat ice in restaurants and washed our teeth with tap water, with no stomach issues. I have no idea if that means it’s safe for babies but if you’d rather use bottled, it’s a good price.

I've just been to Greece and the water from the drinks dispenser was salty so I wouldn't drink the tap water. Bottled water is cheap and our hotel were putting it in the rooms

If your in a hotel the fridge gets stocked with water. I don't think I drink tap water in any Country when I'm on holiday I thought this would be common knowledge for a baby!

I wouldn't want to get ill or my DC.
