How to help baby stand/weight bear?

Baby boy is 8mo. He’s a bit chunky always has been ahead growth wise (currently in 9-12 or 12-18🤣 clothing) he’s quite tall too for his age

However he doesn’t seem to fully bear weight on his legs, if I hold him under his armpits he’ll stand a bit but not long at all, I can’t hold him by the hands and have him stand

I didn’t know this was a thing (first baby) so regretably didn’t practice when he was younger - which my friend loves to point out :/ so he hasn’t practiced much until about 7mo

how can I help
him ? He can only partially stand if I hold him under his armpits. Not at all by the hands

Don't force it! He will do it when he is ready. Your friend sounds like a dick to be honest. I don't know anyone that makes a thing of practising standing with a young baby.

Hugasauras · 07/09/2022 19:42

You just follow their lead. It's not really a 'thing' you need to be doing. If he wants to stand then he'll make it obvious!

No need to help. He'll learn in his own time.

Do you have a baby walker? The kind they hold onto, not the sort you place them in. Mine did quite well with that from about 9 months (and didn’t walk until about 14 months).

Leave him to play sometimes on the floor with some handy nearby sofas. He'll get there when he's ready.

No idea if it happens on a population wide scale, but out of my friends, I'd say the petite babies moved earlier than their chunky friends. Just let him go at his own pace.

Yea don’t force it! It would be extremely rare for them not to stand eventually unless there was a medical issue, and if there was then no amount of trying would help without professional intervention. They all develop at their own speed. From experience, enjoy the immobile state while you can!!!

My youngest could stand up just holding onto one of my hands at 3 months old. We did not practice this. That child was the earliest of my walkers with first steps at a shockingly early … 15 months. In short OP you cannot practice this or at least not until your baby is ready to do it, and even if you did it wouldn’t mean an early Walker or anything really.

Our DD only started weightbearing at 13months. We would do silly things, like sit on the floor next to hear and balance a toy or a block on our head. She would crawl - scramble up us, pulling herself up on our arms and shoulders to reach the toy. It got her starting to push on her legs, which strengthened them. She also had a pretty weak core, so we would do silly games to strengthen that - row row row your boat by doing sit ups etc. This was on advice of HV when we raised some concerns that she was behind on gross motor skills.

This isn't a thing. He will do it when he's ready. 8 months is tiny. Your friend is a dick.

I'm sure I read you're not supposed to make small babies bear their weight until they're ready.

I didn't with mine at all and guess what - he did everything he was supposed to, at his own pace with support and encouragement.

I've never understood the race to get babies to do everything quickly that some people seem to fixate on.

It isn't a thing and you have nothing to regret. Trying to practice this is crazy and more likely to cause him harm.
