How to teach bilingual toddler colours?

I'm struggling to teach my DD 2.5 colours, shapes etc. I know that in playgroups and anywhere else she hears it in English but she doesn't know the English equivilent to which I taught her in my language and I don't want her to look that she doesn't know yet. Anyway any good tips on bilingual kids as my DD is first born so far.

Hi nedkkk, I would advise you to stick to your own language. Living in an English-speaking country, your DD is surrounded by English and will catch up very quickly with her little playgroup peers. What is most difficult with raising a bilingual child is to maintain the "minority" language, so for us who live in English-speaking countries, the language that is not English.

Have a look at this website for advice and tips on raising your bilingual child.

Good luck!

Hi Ned,

I agree with mammya, just teach her in your own language, and let her pick up English in playgroup etc.

I found this website interesting.

There was a lot of good advice on this thread. There are loads of MNetters with bilingual children. It is great to exchange tips and advice.

No, Cali, I have not seen them but will look out for them.

I did not bother much about teaching them as such. DD knows her colours well, even unusual ones. She said today, "our curtains are like caramel raining from the sky". I did not even know that she knew the word caramel.

DS knows most of them, at 3.5yo in both languages.

lol, at Bob der Baumeister

I speak very good German so it was more of an effort for me to stick to English (still is)

I have lots of friends/customers who ask about books for teaching their children English. Will check out the kitty ones.

I think colours are one of the things that the DCs do pick up reasonably easily.

My DD2 (2.5) uses the Teletubbies (should I here?). SO a thing is "red like Po" or "yellow like Lala" etc... But sometimes she forgets the names of the colours so we have "This is like the grass and like Dipsy"

i just taught ds in our language first and he mysteriously learned all the english colours and shapes himself, from CBEEBIES and cds : ) it is amasing how they learn languages. i love cbeebies, he learns so many new english words from it.
