Sterilising

Hello, my baby is 2 days old and just needing some advice on sterilising from other parents as I’m getting mixed messages.

When I sterilise dummy’s in the microwave - in the big steriliser. Where do I store them after? I don’t currently have a small steriliser box. Can they go i tuppawear or does this need to be sterilised too? If he is finished using it can I put it back in said box to use again or does it need sterilising again?

If the dummy falls out of his mouth during the night, is it still ok to use in the morning or do you need a fresh sterilised one?

i know that’s a lot of questions but we have no idea. I don’t want to be doing anything wrong but also feel like I’m sterilising stuff every few hours.

Thanks in advance x

Honestly with dummies I only ever sterilised before first use then if they got dropped outside or in someone else's house.

Most dummies come in a little plastic pot but Tupperware is fine. If you want to sterilise it you can.

I only ever sterilised bottles

the obly time I ever sterilised dummies were before I used them for the first time or if I came across one that had been lost for a few days

sometimes we can be too clean

We sterilise dummies every night when we do the bottles, night time one is replaced in the morning. When she was tiny we'd do it whenever it was dropped, after about 6 months only if dropped outside or somewhere else really. I think it's important to sterilise them as baby always has after a bottle so often gets milk on it and its often in when she spits up.

Oh and we sterilise the little box they come in and use those. We use steam steriliser but also have a Milton bucket on the go so often chuck them in there.

I have a Tupperware with cold water Milton liquid in and just throw them in there and change the water each morning! So much easier than sterlising them in the microwave and don't need to find anywhere to store them. However my LB is now 5 months and licking the floor so I do wonder why I am bothering at all haha!

@FTM2022SS thank you. i have just bought some Milton liquid however don’t have the unit. How much do you put in the tuppawear with water?

I have a 1.5L Tupperware and use a quarter tablet (1.25L), I just measured the first 1.25l with a jug made a perm marker line on the outside so I know where to fill too each day! But as long as the teat is covered you will be fine!

Store it in a clean container or a sandwich bag.
To be really safe, sterilize once every 24 hours. Give it a wash in between each use (so if it’s out of his mouth for a longer time — a few minutes should be fine to just pop it back in).
Lots of people have put slightly unhygienic things in their baby’s mouth, with no problems. But there is always a small risk of some nastier bacteria that could cause a more serious illness. The risk is bigger if your baby was born premature or has health problems, then you should take extra care with hygiene.

Buuut if your baby is 2 days old and you’re breastfeeding, maybe let him suckle instead? It’s good for bonding and will help him grow!
