FTM to ask about baby rash

Hi, I’m a FTM with a 1 month old baby girl. I have a few questions I hope you ladies can help me out with, while I try to see a GP/HV… It’s a few things so please bear with and thank you! 🙏🏼

  1. rash on face / neck - noticed that my little girl has developed a rash of tiny pimples all over her little face and even neck…(pic attached) Does anyone has experience with the same and what worked? I read breast milk helps so that’s the only thing I’ve been dabbing on. Do you think it’s heat rash / eczema / allergy to formula?! (She’s mixed fed - majority is formula. We use the Aptamil)
  2. redness on bum - again over the past few days noticed some redness on her bum. Nothing too severe, it’s a couple of spots, just want to make sure I’m taking the best care of it and it heals / doesn’t get worse. I use Bepanthen after each nappy change; waterwipes to wipe her and since noticing the redness also the yellow Metanium cream. Any other recommendations/ advice? I think it probably showed because there were 1-2 days when we weren’t as religious about the BepNthen after every single nappy change…
  3. tummy - her tummy gets bloated after feeding and she usually gets fussy, gassy, farty. We don’t have any issue with constipation. I wonder if this is normal with small babies, or could it indicate something like intolerance or allergy?! Again, any advice/ experience would be massively appreciated!

thanks so much in advance!!!

I think the spots may well be milk spots. I think they're called milia if you google it.

My baby is ten months and I combined feed her too. We started her off with aptamil but she was really farty on it. Eventually we switched to Hipp which has been much gentler on her tummy and no problems since. Anecdotally some of the other mums I know have had similar with aptamil but much better results with Hipp

Hi

Below my answers but definitely still get a GP/HVs opinion

  1. Looks like baby acne to me. My little one got it and it looks very similar. Leave it alone and it should clear up. Took my little one about 2 weeks to clear
  1. I use sudocrem or panthanol but all works fine. Just make sure you use quite a bit and it should go away
  1. My baby was 5.11 at birth so a small baby. For the first 6 weeks of his life he had horrific gas/ bloaty belly/ fussy. Im not sure if it's because he was small but he had it really bad. We fed him upright, made sure to burp every couple of oz (I bottle feed but if breaat feeding burp every now and then during the feed) and do bicycles with his legs after to help get all the gas out.

It can be a sign of an allergy though so deffo get it checked - but with my little one it seemed to just be gas. It's pretty common for babies to be gassy for the first few weeks of life

Hope that helps - im not a medical professional but it seems like normal baby stuff to me xx

Oh and I use aptamil. They are legally all pretty much the same but some babies do get on better with one over another. Baby is still quite young so getting used to digestion. I'd stick with it myself for a little while longer before changing but if you think it might help it doesn't hurt to try a different formula

Sounds like standard one-month-old. Watchful waiting until the next appointment is also a perfectly good approach. It can feel like the little health things that come up are problems you have to solve, but you often just have to wait.

Also, you don’t have to use cream after a nappy change when they don’t have a rash. Modern nappies keep them so dry and there’s no need to add a load of moisture when nothing is wrong.

I just wanted to add on to what pp had said about nappies. We use talc nearly every nappy change to help with moisture.

I sudocrem her bum on a nighttime once she started sleeping through.

I didn’t use talc either, they had nappy rash perhaps one or two days in three years. When you potty train you realise that dampness and wetness is a completely foreign feeling to them if you use disposable nappies.

Thanks all! Really appreciate your insight! It seems to be heat related the rash, because when out and about in the fresh air it seems to be way less red! So trying to keep windows open at home and dress her less, hopefully it clears quickly 🤞🏻

Don't use talc on her.

Recent advice is not to put cream on after everyone change, but I would maybe dab a bit on the red marks.

It looks like baby acne to me too, DD looked like that and it did clear up on its own.
