Subject says it all really. Im struggling. Twins 2 and half. No speech at all. One has gained some good understanding -still delayed but has come on alot. If ask wheres your tongue, nose, ears she will show if ask wheres peppa she will get peppa toy. If ask to sit down will sit. Her twin brother has alot less basic understanding but has come om recent months will show us what he wants by bringing it or pulling us to it. Will give kisses and cuddles. Both terrible sleepers. But no speech ive tried everything speech therapy just isnt helping! And im exhauasted i feel like ive failed them or somehow to blame im worrying about having to apply for schools next yr. So long away and silly to worry now i know but is it even possible for them to catch up now 😭

If it helps you feel any better I’ve know children not speak until they are 3, then it all came out and absolutely no problems later. It’s too early in my opinion to worry about it and you are certainly not failing them.

I didn't say a single word until I was 3! I would say I'm pretty normal now 2:1 degree so it hasn't held me back in any way. Also I've always been told the main thing is that they're progressing it doesn't matter what speed and the pointing and understanding comes into that x

Twins often develop their own way of communicating between each other and exclude others. Don't beat yourself up!

Both my children were both late to talk but my the time they got to Reception they were up to speed. Keep talking & reading to them & lots of socialisation.
I didn't find the NHS particularly helpful as it seemed very underfunded so by the time my DD came along & started having the same struggles I went private for a few months (I appreciate that's twice the price with twins, sorry). I did basic Makaton with both of them which helped massively.

Thanks for your comments one twin has been placed on the pathway and i do think ASD is on the cards but sometimes we have bad days and last week was one of them. I always try to remain positive especially when comes to speech and hope if we keep trying it will eventually come. Other days i feel as though i dont know what im doing or how to help! But thanks so much for your comments!xx

Hey I just wondered if there was any update to your situation? I’ve found this thread in a late night google moment of despair as my boy and girl twins are in the exact same boat as yours were in 2022. Mine turned 2.5 this month. Thanks in advance xx

CadyEastman · 12/02/2024 10:59

@TwinMumBG have yours had some SLT sessions too?

TwinMumBG · 12/02/2024 11:14

They have been referred, but they only just qualified for the threshold to be referred a few weeks ago x
