No room to sleep!!

I'm looking for sleep solutions for my 2 and 4 year old. They both fall asleep in their own beds but come in to mine in the middle of the night. So husband is now in the spare room but I'm still so squashed! They sleep at strange angles and I'm getting more and more tired. Has anyone done a single next to a king size or do I need it bigger? My bed has a really thick mattress and is high so I'd want to find a single the same height. Anyone any cool Mum suggestions or ideas? X

put them back into there own beds

MintJulia · 01/09/2022 07:14

Yes, keep returning them to their own beds. They need to get used to sleeping alone.

Take them back to bed and break the habit

My friend slept on a mattress, two doubles together so that they could all sleep together until the children were ready to sleep alone. It worked for them and they sleep in their own bedrooms now.

i did have a toddler bed next to my bed for a while but found that they wanted to sleep in the double anyway, as they wanted to be cuddly.

cosleeping is a valid choice, there are pros and cons. They’ll go to their own beds eventually.

JuneOsborne · 01/09/2022 07:21

Ha ha, you should probably return them to their own beds. Didn't work for us. We have an emperor sized bed. It's 7ft wide. Solved all the problems immediately, as you could have a 5 a side football team in there and still have enough room!

notangelinajolie · 01/09/2022 07:22

Back to their own beds every time. If you don’t stop this it will only get worse as they get bigger.

MoodyTwo · 01/09/2022 07:24

We have a super king and bad all 4 of us in this morning ... expecting as it gets colder the bed will keep having visitors 😂

Frizzzmonster · 01/09/2022 07:29

Is there a reason why you don't put them back into their own beds?

noclothesinbed · 01/09/2022 07:29

Look up the 3 day nanny on utube the back to bed technique. They are old enough to stay in their own beds now and can not be doing your marriage any favours.

MinervaTerrathorn · 01/09/2022 07:31

Have you tried them sleeping apart from you but together? I coslept but wouldn't have if it didn't work for us (just me and DS).

LeonoraFlorence · 01/09/2022 07:34

We have a super king but with 5 DDs, even that isn’t big enough some nights! 😂 I know what you mean about odd angles, it can be uncomfortable.
Sometimes DH ends up in spare room but we have been known to bring that mattress on to the floor of master bedroom. They won’t want to be in with you forever.

littlebluetrain · 01/09/2022 07:34

I disagree that the solution is to keep putting them back in their own beds. Who wants to be doing that nonsense in the middle of the night?? Not sure where the idea that "it'll only get worse as they get older" comes from. Children become MORE independent with age and maturity and need the chance to be dependent when they're little!

Some options...

  1. Do the two of them share a room or have separate ones? If they don't already share, maybe they could try it? It can be scary sleeping on your own at night.
  1. Get dad back in bed with you and put a couple kids' sleeping bags on the floor of your room. Explain to your kids that the "special sleeping bags" are for them if they feel they need to be close to you during the night, because they are wriggly in bed and you need sleep too! It's ok to tell them this!
  1. Get a bigger bed or join a few together (though in my experience, kids always end up rightnexttoyou anyway...)

If your sleep is being impacted, it's totally ok to set some new rules and boundaries! Don't settle for suffering. Might be harder with the 2yo, but if they see 4yo doing something different, maybe they'll follow their lead.

20viona · 01/09/2022 07:37

Get them
Back in their own beds the end. Every time they walk in, return them in silence. Might take 20 times the first night but it works.

carefullycourageous · 01/09/2022 07:39

I'd get an extra single in your room. The slight difference in height wouldn't bother me. We had a single + a double for a while and it meant no one had to vacate.

soupmaker · 01/09/2022 07:45

I really miss the DC climbing in with us. Of course it was a pain at the time, but they grow out of it. We returned them to bed but if they didn't settle after 2 attempts we just accepted they wanted in for cuddles and security. Sometimes with DC2 in particular we'd not even notice they'd climbed in!

TooMinty · 01/09/2022 07:51

Buy them a double bed to share with each other?

RampantIvy · 01/09/2022 07:55

DD was (and still is) such a fidget. I used to leave her in my bed and go and sleep in her bed.

ShaunaTheSheep · 01/09/2022 07:56

Leave them to it and go and sleep in their beds.

They grow out of it.

Twizbe · 01/09/2022 08:08

I'd be putting them back in their bed now. It will be a tough night or three but then problem solvers.

Jules912 · 01/09/2022 09:46

We got a super king size bed for this reason ( although did have to wait until we bought a new house with a bigger bedroom). As they got older both children decided they preferred their own beds and only came in in the mornings ( and now they rarely do that). Love still having a huge bed though!

Hugasauras · 01/09/2022 09:51

Super king!

But DD(3) comes through in the night and she has a little bed set up beside where my husband is sleeping (I am cosleeping with newborn DD2 in another room) and just gets into it herself. It doesn't even wake him now!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 01/09/2022 09:51

This could go on for some time (and get more uncomfortable as they get bigger) unless you actively and consistently put them back to bed.

It’s a personal choice, I wasn’t coping with constant disturbed nights so took the short term pain of quietly returning ds to bed every time. It only took a few nights for him to start sleeping the whole night in his own bed.

good luck whatever you decide!

LouisaBeara · 04/09/2022 21:18

That hasn't worked. I'm happy to sleep with them if they wake up. I just need more room so I'm looking for ideas

Put them back to their own bed. Every time.
