Standing up in cot

Tearing my hair out again. My 13 mo WAS sleep trained - I was putting him in the cot and leaving the room, then he'd go to sleep soon after.

For the last month when I leave he's been standing up in the cot and shouting. He's having 1 nap at an appropriate awake window. I've had to stay in the room with him and I'm once again spending my life sitting next to the cot. He's now standing up even when I'm there instead of going to sleep. I don't talk to him and don't make eye contact, but I can tell it's become a game to him so I leave him to shout a little while so as not to engage. If I stayed he the room he would still stand up and also not go to sleep.

What are you supposed to do and will this ever end???

Bung him in his pushchair and go for a walk. Does he have to nap in his cot?

I would leave him to it, op. You don't need to sit with as long he's safe. Leave a cardboard book or a small toy to keep him amused and he should self settle to sleep.

When DS did the same at that age I told him I would stay in the room as long as he laid down nicely and went to sleep, otherwise I would leave if he wanted to stand up and play, so as not to make it a punishment that I was leaving, just a natural thing of playtime = fine, but mummy goes, sleeptime = fine, mummy will stay.

He got the idea pretty quickly, and then we did gradual retreat after that. Now he sometimes goes to sleep straight away and sometimes rolls around and sings for a bit before going to sleep.
