Struggling to get my 3 month old to sleep- PLEASE help!

I have a 3 month old who needs a lot of attention. He quickly gets grumpy when sleepy and only really lasts an hour awake BUT I can’t get him to sleep!

He hates the car, pram (laying and sitting position), and carrier. He doesn’t really even like being held. We have been holding him against us and rocking/bouncing whilst shhhing which used to work but he screams every single time now.

I just don’t know what to do. It’s like I’m torturing my baby every time I try and get him to sleep but he would never just fall asleep on his own.

PLEASE help me.

Hi OP. Didn’t want to read and run as he sounds just like my DS1 as a baby.
I don’t want to put ideas in your head, but have you ever considered there could be something else going on?
DS1 had awful reflux and a milk intolerance (which took us a few weeks of him screaming and no sleep to realise!) he would only fall asleep if upright and even sometimes that didn’t do it.

@Mumofboys17 thanks for replying

What sort of symptoms did your LO one have? How did you get a diagnosis and what treatment did you use/did it help?

I have been dairy free for nearly 4 weeks as GP queried CMPA but I don’t think we’ve had any improvement

hello, sounds very similar to my situation! My little one is 15 weeks old, for the last few weeks he takes much longer to fall asleep. Before I’d feed him and put him down in his cot and he’d be asleep. Now, as soon as I put him down he screams and cries. No amount of shushing helps… the only way he’ll stay quiet/sleep is if he’s on the boob laying next to me. He also wakes up much earlier in the morning and won’t settle back down to sleep.

In the daytime I’ve noticed he gets bored very easily and constantly needs entertaining.

Sometimes I can tell he is overtired - he’ll be yawning and almost closing his eyes but then starts screaming and crying as he’s annoyed he can’t sleep.

im thinking it’s either teething pains, a growth spurt or the dreaded 4 month sleep regression come early!

My DS was like this and we went through everything trying to find something wrong. There wasn't anything wrong, he was just a difficult baby. The best advice I got was to stop trying so much with the sleep thing. I realised that we were actually making him even more grumpy with all the faffing about. What we did, when we knew he was tired, was to put him down for a nap and to give him a bit more time to go to sleep. Previously, we were picking him up as soon as he cried. It did take a bit of time for him to settle but he did and then slept for longer.

PritiPatelsMaker · 26/08/2022 13:47

My DS was similar although he would sleep in the car but only after around 20 minutes if screaming or he would fall asleep on the breast but scream if we tried to move him.

With him I think it was tongue tie.

@TunaJacket DS1’s birth was quite traumatic and required a lot of intervention (apparently there is quite a link with this and c section babies having milk allergies)
He had a bit of a rash all over, his dirty nappies were loose, explosive and he went about 10-20 times a day (no joke it really was that much!) he was unsettled and unhappy all the time. He must have been in so much pain before I worked it out! 🙁
Have you eliminated soya as well? It’s normally recommended to go completely free from both at first as the proteins are very similar in soya and dairy. It can take a while of a strict elimination to see results but would have thought by 4 weeks he would have improved a bit 🙁

I do want to stress though, every baby is different. I had DS2 17 months ago and he’s the complete opposite of his older brother 😅 I didn’t need to cut dairy from my diet or anything.

Just read an above post re tongue tie too, definitely worth getting that checked if you haven’t already x

@TunaJacket if you think it may be dairy, this article from Kellymom is very good as is this one from Kellymom.

I really would have a look at the Tongue Tie article that I posted earlier though as he sounds just like my DS was Flowers

@PritiPatelsMaker did you get your baby's tongue tie fixed, and did you notice a difference in sleep? I'm currently waiting on an appt with my local ENT (being referred via the health visitor).

PritiPatelsMaker · 27/08/2022 08:43

@Calphurnia88 no but only because I'd never heard if tt until
I joined Mn when I was pg with DC2. Really, really wish I had though.
