Advice needed! 10 month old leaking nappy overnight

Hello,

I am looking for some advice. I have a DS aged 10 months, who is often leaking through his nappy overnight and I don't know what to do.

He has a last nappy change before he goes to bed (7:30pm). He then has a last feed at approx. 9:30pm, but this is a kind of dream feed and doesn't have his nappy changed before or after. He often wakes up around 5am and has leaked through his nappy (he sometimes wakes before then but it is a case of dummy back in and straight back to sleep).

He normally sleeps on his tummy (he rolls onto his tummy himself - I always put him in his cot on his back but he immediately rolls onto his side then rolls onto his tummy as some point during the night). When he wakes up with a leaked nappy he is wet all over his tummy, so I think the nappy is leaking through the top over the waistband. As you can imagine he is quite distressed when he wakes up wet.

I am using size 4+ (i.e. extra absorbency) Aldi mamia nappies. Often when the nappy has leaked it doesn't seem like it is totally full if you know what i mean, just that it is very full at the front of the nappy.

Does anyone have any advice or has been in the same situation? We are getting to the stage where it is almost every night that he is leaking through, and requires a full outfit change and change of sleeping bag and sheets, and is obviously very upsetting for the wee guy.

Thanks!

I would say he needs smaller nappies and to be changed at the 9.30pm feed? The reason it's come up out the top is the nappies are too big, surely?

MDevane86 · 25/08/2022 16:00

Have you tried size 4+ pull ups? I used to have this problem and the pulls ups sorted the leaking, they normally have a thick stretchy waistband to stop leakage over the top.

Dogsandbabies · 25/08/2022 16:04

I would suggest you try a few different nappy brands. We had the same with all three of my children when they started sleeping through. I think different brands account for different body shapes. One settled well with Lidl, one with pampers and one with Tesco nappies.

@Useitorloseit or he maybe needs a size bigger if the nappy is folding under the belly.

i agree with pp about pull ups tho if he is a belly sleeper as they go higher up. I think with belly sleepers Thts happens more often as the pee just builds up at the front rather than spreading evenly n then baby lying on it jst pressures it to come up and over

Hi my baby is 6 months and we had issues with overnight leaking until we recently started using a reusable nappy booster in his disposable nappy. No more leaking!

twilightcloud · 25/08/2022 16:42

Thanks everyone for the advice!

I don't think we will get away with using smaller or larger nappies, size 3 are a bit tight for him now and he is probably about 10kg now so might be too small to fit in size 5.

I will try some pull ups and some different brands, and will look into the nappy booster too.

I think bigger nappies are needed, rather than smaller.

Goldieshock · 25/08/2022 16:47

Our hack...

Two nappies, first one punctured with a few holes, second one, bigger size, over the top, on backwards. Worked a treat.

FilePhoto · 25/08/2022 16:49

Make sure his penis is pointing down into the nappy not up at the waistband.

Lentilbaby · 25/08/2022 16:52

We found the Asda Little Ones plus nappies good to reduce leakage.
Not 100% though.

Topjoe19 · 25/08/2022 16:54

Try a bladder weakness type pad as a liner in the nappy, stops the leaks overnight. Worked a treat with my DC who was always soaked through!

Namechange192727171 · 25/08/2022 16:54

Yes to pull ups, we had the same problem!

Downandout01 · 25/08/2022 16:56

We've had this more frequently with our DS than we ever had with our DD. I think it is because with boys the urine seems to stay all at the front of the nappy whereas with girls the urine goes more into middle of the nappy crotch and I guess absorbs evenly in both directions? We sized up from 2 to 3s which helped a lot but also I change him at the dream feed too now.

Ariela · 25/08/2022 17:13

Cloth nappies - then you can add extra absorbency as required

Cheesystuffedcrust · 25/08/2022 18:40

double check the weight as I believe the weight for size 4+ is less than size 4 so perhaps counterintuitive but size 4 might fit better? Also try different brands.

is the dream feed definitely needed? Could try reducing the amount.

make sure the vest (if wearing one) isn’t too small, might be worth sizing up overnight.

when putting on the nappy pull it further forward than you normally would during the day, so it is higher at the front than the back - hope this makes sense!!

make sure willy is pointing downwards

also , I’ve not tried this but heard of people putting the nappy on back to front. Might be worth a go.

I've found my baby's nappies leak at night when he's starting to grow out of his vest/sleepsuit and it's a little tight over the nappy. Might be worth trying him in a larger outfit overnight

Genevieve99 · 25/08/2022 19:45

A lot of people on here love the mamia nappies, but they leaked every time for us! We use pampers overnight pull ups now and never get any leaks, and my 14 month old drinks quite a bit of milk overnight. We tried a few different brands but settled on pampers. Different brands work for different babies 🙂

Greentomatoes21 · 25/08/2022 19:55

I second the reuseable nappy booster or bladder leak pad like Tena (or tesco own, I think the brand is Spirit - 80p a pack). Both worked for my tummy sleeper! Not that he's older we don't need either as his liquid intake isn't as high as a baby on milk diet xx

hewouldwouldnthe · 25/08/2022 19:56

You can get nappy inserts which are disposable, or ones that are washable to add some extra absorbancy overnight. amazon do them. the disposable ones have a weird name like speckelberger!

Surgarblossom · 25/08/2022 20:03

This kept on happening with my LO I went up a size ( one size bigger than what he would wear during the day) and he hasn't leaked since)

Hohofortherobbers · 25/08/2022 20:03

Always Pampers for night time. Pull up high at the front and fasten by pointing the tabs down diagonally to hoik it up further.

twilightcloud · 26/08/2022 10:02

Thanks again for all the replies, lots for me to try!

That's interesting about the vests, I will try that too. Now that I think about it, the past couple of days I have had him in some 6-9mth vests that he still fits (the rest of the vests he wears are 9-12mth) so that could be a contributing factor.

Also interesting about the differences people have found with boys v girls. My mum mentioned some time ago that huggies used to do girl and boy versions of nappies so must have been for this reason! This must have been back in the mid nineties when she had my wee brother.

Re the dream feed, he probably doesn't need this as such. But he is an absolute monkey at going to sleep (won't go to sleep on his own which is a whole other story). I have found the only way to get him to sleep in the cot is if he has a feed at half nine then goes into his cot super sleepy and milk drunk (before that we just cuddle him and he sleeps on us). I have tried feeding him just before his bedtime but he refuses to be put down then.

I found aldi nappies where great until about size 3/4 then started to leak. Moved to Sainsburys / pampers and never had a problem since. Apart from the time her vest size needed to go up. But had tried this with Aldi nappies and it didn’t solve the problem.

Sobaridiot · 26/08/2022 23:33

Old fashioned terry cloth with a good wrap. Cloth nappies are much better at containing (once you've worked it all out)

Our hack...

We did this with our heavy wetter from about 6 months to potty training. Literally the only thing that worked for him. Never leaked once! Amazing hack
