Nutramigen shortage

Hi,

Is anyone else having problems getting nutramigen formula? My Ds has been prescribed it but when we went to pick it up today at boots chemist and were told the manufacturer is having a problem and it won't be available till 22nd September!?
We're going to try other pharmacy's but I know from experience that lloyds were having issues being able to get it a few weeks ago and the independent pharmacies nearby can't get hold of it!
We've had to buy some lactose free SMA got now but I'm worried it will make our little one sick 😓 is there another brand anyone has been prescribed by their GP?

I had this problem with Nutramigen 2 and the GP prescribed Aptamil Pepti 2 in its place

Oh gosh, this is awful. My ds had this when he was a baby.

I’ve heard of neocate. Could that be an alternative?

Mugcake · 24/08/2022 14:56

Thanks both, I'll ask about both those options! I've now been to lloyds and superdrug and no luck, seems like none of the suppliers can get hold of it.
It's so horrible giving him something that I know is bad for him 🙁

I’d ring your GP urgently tomorrow morning and explain and ask for an alternative prescription issued urgently. I’d then go to your usual pharmacy, say the prescription is being issued today and can they order it in/part fill any on the meantime. Mine have done that before.

Yes, we're having the same issues. We were prescribed 10 tins of Nutramigen and could only get 2 on Friday which will last us less than a week. They said to call on Tuesday to check if any more have came in but I'm not holding my breath. It's so concerning that mothers are having to ring round chemists to feed their babies. As if motherhood isn't stressful enough.

My LO is on the cusp of switching to Neocate anyway due to him displaying signs of a reaction to Nutramigen. It's a hydrolysed formula so contains broken down cow's milk protein to help your LO become tolerant to it by the time they're 12-24 months (sorry if I'm telling you something you already know!). Neocate, however, is an amino acid formula with no cow's milk in at all so is not a like-for-like alternative. Aptamil Pepti is hydrolysed so would definitely be the better alternative if you really need to switch due to the shortage 😊

You also don’t need a prescription to buy the formula. When my son was on formula and on aptimil for his dairy allergy we ran out and went to the chemist to buy it - cost a small fortune (think between £16-£22, can’t remember which) for a tub.

the difficulty is they don’t often have it in. The aptimil one is the most expensive because most babies can tolerate it, compared to others (this is what we were told) and it’s a last resort for GPs to prescribe due to cost.

if that’s what your GP is suggesting
next, I’d just call different pharmacies and see if they’ve got it in.

Yep! The same! I loved Nutramigen coz was brilliant on my little ones tummy and also easy to make! Just room temp water!!!!👍😀We we’re given Aptamil Pepti 2 … One of the doctors said that goat’s formulas are good for babies with cows milk allergy if baby doesn’t like A. Ladies I think that shortages might take longer as they’ve been having issues in America longer than here 🤦🏼‍♂️
