Baby cries uncontrollably when feeding

Hi all,
Hoping for a little advice. My son is 10 weeks old and has been FF since birth. He has been on Hipp Organic since birth with MAM anti colic bottles. For weeks he has been crying uncontrollably during his bedtime feed around 6.30pm however in recent days; he now does it almost every feed! He moves his head side to side, spits milk out, cries so much and takes ages to get even a couple of ounces down. I've tried to change the teat size from 1 to 2. Today I've changed from MAM bottles to Dr Browns. Hasn't made much of difference but it's only been a day. I also decided to buy Aptamil advance today and he's had it once so far, hasn't made a difference except for the fact that he threw a lot of it up! It's so difficult as my baby doesn't seem to ever enjoy drinking his milk. A paediatrician has checked him over and they're confident he's fine as he's gaining weight (currently 5.5kg) and otherwise a healthy baby. Also worth mentioning after his night feed (3am) he never settles back to sleep, he just grunts so loudly, kicks his legs and cries. Any advice/similar stories welcome please!

Great news!

The obvious answer is usually the correct one. It’s a shame you’ve had to endure weeks of feed refusal, pain and screaming but fingers crossed things will now improve.

Hi all,
Me again. So I hope you won't judge me but I didn't start my boy on the neocate lcp because the few days I had to wait to collect, he fed on his hipp pretty well and for the last couple of weeks I would say he wasn't really crying uncontrollably during feeds, still resisting but it was definitely easier. However, when we had him weighed like a week ago he had lost 50grams in weight in the space of a week. Now, he has gone back to refusing his milk but apart from just crying during his feeds, he now cries uncontrollably to the point he stops making sound as he goes bright red after and between feeds..... in my heart I just don't feel he has CMPA which is why I didn't end up giving him the neocate. Apart from the crying and refusing to feed, he has no other symptoms of it! I really don't know what to do but the doctor is going to call today and I may even just go to A&E as in the last two days he is barely getting through 2 ounces a feed. He is now 3 months old and I'm so worried.

No judgement but why are you so against the idea of CMPA?

The only symptoms my sons had (apart from cradle cap) were extreme distress, poor weight gain and good refusal.

What other symptoms is it you think babies need to indicate CMPA?

A lot of people think that unless there is diarrhoea and vomiting then it can’t be CMPA.

You seem quite averse to accepting this may be the issue?

Why wouldn’t you at least try dairy free milk and see if it helps rather than see your baby in pain and losing weight?

EmptyHouse0822 · 26/09/2022 08:30

good refusal is obviously meant to say food refusal 😂

He was very good at refusing it though 😂

bigheartlittleheart · 26/09/2022 12:06

@EmptyHouse0822 to be honest, you are right. Maybe it is my fault! I haven't really got the answer as to why I didn't start him on the milk. I just thought it might not be CMPA but rather reflux.. I honestly don't know..

It’s not your fault at all - don’t be hard on yourself. Dealing with babies with these issues is absolutely heartbreaking. A lot of us on here have been through the same so we understand the upset and conflicting feelings you are having.

Perhaps just have another chat about it with your GP when they call.

TheGlitterFairy · 26/09/2022 12:43

OP - we had to use aptamil anti reflux milk - can buy from larger supermarkets - had an amazing GP at the time that suggested trying this first before medication. I’d not heard of it before she mentioned it and it was incredible - totally removed all of the symptoms - namely projectile vomming after each feed and then he was able to enjoy his milk. We had to use a faster test with it as it’s thicker - so stays down. Might be worth a go?

TheGlitterFairy · 26/09/2022 12:43

Oh I was also worried about changing the milk - he’d been on a preemie one before that and was concerned I needed to phase it out- GP said to switch over straight away and it was totally fine to do that
