Mothercare Smart Nappy - has anybody used these? Can you tell me what they're like please?

I'm looking into reusable nappies for DS... He's on Cow and Gate comfort milk atm, so poos are amazingly explosive and hard to contain - have tried terries so far with motherease wraps, and it just can't contain it. Had to throw away the babygro he had on because the poo just wouldn't come out.

I've looked at the mothercare smart nappies, and the design looks like it should work - does anybody have experience of these?

Please help, I feel completely clueless when it comes to cloth nappies.. and I'm skint, so can't bring myself to try loads of trial packs.

Any advice welcome, thank you!

just look like a really expensive way to buy prefolds to me...

I'd keep to the Motherease wraps and maybe think about a shaped nappy underneath as the elasticated legs on (eg) totsbots really help containment

I'm not even sure what prefolds are - can you enlighten me (sorry, said I was clueless :-p)

they're just like a multilayered cotton pad that goes in a waterproof outer

here

there are lots of different folds you can try with terries for better poo-catching before you shell out more cash though - some here and some

I would say maybe a shaped nappy with your motherease wrap. I have always found motherease wraps bomb proof, have you got them tight enough?

kekouan · 21/01/2008 21:12

I think that might be part of the problem. I found it really hard to get the motherease wrap tight enough - he's got a fat belly but very skinny legs and I just couldn't get a secure enough fit..

just thought something with an extra bit to catch the poo might help, rather than relying on just the wrap? Does that make sense?

I would avoid the smart nappies if you are having problems with containment. They are more reliable than Weenees (which are a similar design) but not the most reliable nappy you will find IME. In fact there aren't that many people who find prefolds entirely reliable - they do have their fans but many find they don't work very well.

Definitely second the shaped nappy plus the motherease wrap suggesstion. You don't have to go with Tots Bots for shaped nappies, Little Lamb, Easy Peasy, Lollipop among others are all just as good and cheaper. There are different fabrics to pick to suit your needs (bamboo - v absorbant and stays v soft, microfibre dries very quickly etc) I have had problems with containment with terries despite trying the different folds but then I think my origami skills were rather poor . Are you getting leaks through your wraps too? That does sound like they are not tight enough as babybufter says or it is not completely covering the nappy.

Have you looked to see if you have a real nappy project near you? You may be able to hire a trial kit to see what suits you best and there may also be a financial incentive (money back on nappies bought or interest free loan) to be had! I work for my local real nappy project and a lot of people in your situation find the service really useful. There are also websites where you can buy second hand nappies once you have found what is right for you.

are you using rikki wraps then (velcro)?

BabyBuftersNappies · 21/01/2008 21:58

I was wondering about if they are rikki as airflows give a better fit.

coby · 21/01/2008 22:03

yep airflows are fab for thin waist, chubby legs or 'tother way round as well as uniformly chubby or thin - thing is Rikkis are usually better over terry squares as they hold the underlying shape better.....

kekouan · 22/01/2008 09:00

Hmm... Ok, I'm going to get some sample packs I think. Had forgotten about little lamb ones, so thanks for the reminder.

Yes, I was using the Rikki wrap - think the other one would contain better... will have to try that too.

The airflow i found give a better fit as you can adjust the waist as well as the legs.

There are loads of 2nd hand nappies about at the mo as i think everyone is trying to clear xmas debt. That way you can try and resell if they dont work without losing much money.

diddle · 23/01/2008 21:55

I use the mothercare smart nappy, and they're not very good for containment, my ds2 is 3 months old, so still has very loose poo. You do have to change them regularly and almost every pooey nappy leaks. but aart from that they're good, and if they did them big enough for my toddler i would definitly used them.

Bouncingturtle · 25/01/2008 10:20

I tried them for my bf newborn - not impressed, tried it 3 times, leaked every time.

nappyaddict · 08/02/2008 01:54

are smart nappies prefolds? i've heard about them on here but haven't seen any in the flesh yet.

kekouan · 08/02/2008 20:23

No, don't think so...
