What age should my 19 month old start using a duvet and pillow? he has been getting the sofa cushions and resting his head on them when he's tired so i think he l would like the comfort of a pillow plus they use them at nursery.

I worry that DS will be cold if he kicks it off so do you put extra layers on just in case?

He sleeps so well 7-7 most days and I don’t want to upset his routine. He is in a lightweight summer sleeping bag at the moment.

DS climbed out of his cot around 19 months so we needed to move him to
a bed. I think we introduced a duvet straight away. I don’t recall the official advice, although I know it’s important to use the right size duvet (e.g. he’s in a toddler sized bed so needed a toddler sized duvet not a single). Think we got from John Lewis. We had bought the worlds thinnest pillow from Ikea but it didn’t last long, I think he hated it. So switched to the plumper JL one.

DD started using a duvet at about 18 months.

Now is a good time of year to start with one - it takes a while for them to learn how to keep it on and get back under it if it comes off, and that's less drama in August than February!

Get a single duvet and turn it through 90 degreesi ie: so the long edges lies across the width of the bed. Tuck in the long edges to stop your child kicking the duvet off. The "width" of the duvet should be plenty "long" enough for a toddler.

Don't worry if they are that cold they will wake you up.

Don't dress them in extra layers as they can easily over heat which is more serious as little kids can't remove the extra layers and can die before telling you.

If he’s still comfortable using a sleeping bag just get a pillow? That’s what I done with my DD.

Thanks everyone. You just worry don't you. i've taken the plunge and made his cot up with the duvet tucked in length ways as suggested and popped his pillow in too. With it being warm at the moment he should get time to get used to it before the weather changes.
