Spit up

My 9 week old little girl has had constipation since day dot, she's on comfort milk for colic & constipation and also lactulose to help soften her stools. She is also on colief as she has colic.

Recently in last week she has started sicking up her milk just after feeds and sometimes a bit later, she also brings up clear fluid throughout the day randomly if she just laid in her Moses or in her swing. I've found her Moses basket sheet wet where he head is so she is obv doing it overnight too. I've presumed it's spit but there's quite a lot of it each time maybe 1/2 tablespoons.

She has also recently started gagging/choking now and again with it, she always manages to cough it up but it's panicking me a bit, I tend to grab her and pat her back over my knee.

She's a thriving healthy 9 week old, I mentioned it the GP who seems unconcerned but just wondered if anyone else babies did this?

Thanks

My daughter had reflux and colic. When we tried comfort milk she would throw up clear liquid - the formula is heavier and separated in her stomach. The clear liquid was the water, whereas the formula stayed down. She would choke on it too.

It was so bad we took her off it, we went back to normal formula and Gaviscon. She was still sick, but not as much, and most importantly for me, she didn't struggle to bring it up, or choke.

Had anyone suggested that she may have Cow's Milk Protein Allergy?

Have a read of the article and if you think she has it and she's vomiting in her sleep, I'd be tempted to ring 111.

The GP has dismissed this as apparently only 7% of babies have this and there is a lot of misdiagnosis.

She has been okay on the comfort milk up until recently. My best friends little one has CMA and was covered in rashes etc. but took a long time to be diagnosed.
I will keep an eye on it but don't think it is CMPA I think it's just reflux.

This is really interesting because this is exactly what my daughter is doing. Can I ask what comfort milk she was on?

Mine is on aptamil comfort.

Might have to try what you have said normal milk + gaviscon. I'll contact GP.

Your GP is misinformed, it's one in ten.

I really would recommend reading the article especially as your LO has at least 3 symptoms.

Also, I think that reflux is a symptom rather than a diagnosis?

I will mention it again to my GP.

Think it's difficult as the symptoms are all very similar to what you would expect of a baby in general.

GPs are sooo fucking reluctant for some reason to suggest CMPA. We thought my little one had it and she wouldn't entertain it because "its rare". Its not actually that rare.
Keep an eye on it. It doesn't overly sound like it to me but every baby is different and some only have a few symptoms.

It is common with the comfort formula for them to spit up clear liquid as the PP says.

I'm not an expert but reflux is an odd one as there is usually an underlying issue for it. Has your little one been checked for tongue tie?

I would suggest all the usual like upright feeds, burping once or twice during the feeds etc. Maybe try going back to normal formula, not using the colief etc etc... my only suggestion is try one thing at a time because I changed everything at once and I had no idea what worked so went back to square one!

Hammer your GP though. They should take your worries and concerns seriously and try to support you and your little one

Each time I've taken my little one to the GP since she's been born (mostly for the constipation) they have treated me like an over cautious first time mum, it's sooo frustrating.

The only reason I got colief on prescription was because she had an inconsolable screaming fit in front of the Dr and he knew it was colic as his own kids had had it.

I mentioned CMPA and they totally dismissed it but I will keep an eye on it.

She's been checked for tongue tie and she has a slight posterior one but not enough to affect feeding or need cutting.

Deffo agree on the one thing at a time, since the gp prescribed it all at once, I have no idea what's working and what isn't 🙈

In your position I'd be tempted to see the HV and tell them everything you're concerned about especially the concern around her doing it in the night. Back when DS was poorly I actually had a HV call the doctor on my behalf as I too was being passed off as an over cautious mum. I was soon seen and taken seriously.

I was in a very similar position with DC2 and an osteopath worked wonders. Symptoms didn't instantly disappear but there was a very noticeable instant improvement and within a month or 2 they were like a different baby.

The HV only comes twice in my area...once in first month, then again in month 2 and then the next visit now is when she is 1 yr old...apparently 'due to covid' and staffing any babies that are putting weight on and deemed fine apart from the usual issues aren't seen again until their first birthday. There's a number to call for advice but to be honest the HV that have come have been useless and given conflicting advice so don't feel they would be much help!

Yup same in my area with the HV. I text the advice line and was told someone would call me back.. that was 4 weeks ago. Luckily the problem resolved but what an utter joke.

The GP does the same with me. Just because we are first time mums and yes, maybe over cautious sometimes, we still deserve our concerns to be taken seriously.

Try a few different changes yourself but if you are still really worried just keep ringing the GP until they take you seriously.

She was on Cow and Gate Comfort, but it's made by the same company as Aptamil, and when you compare the labels the ingredients list is identical...as is the type of packaging.

Aptamil is more expensive but no different.

Hello. I appreciate it is 3 years on. Our little boy is just over 3 months and has been on the exact same journey. Currently on omeprazole and comfort milk. Poos today have been constant and is spitting up watery liquid. Please let us know what eventually was your resolution? Thanks
