Terrified my baby has a coldsore

Hi,

My baby has developed a sore on his mouth this morning, and I'm so upset that he might have got a cold sore from somebody.

The doctor has advised it's either a coldsore or impetigo and the pharmacist thinks its either a coldsore or angular cheilitis.

Does anybody recognise a sore and have an opinion on what it might be? I know i can wait it out but honestly it's causing me so much anxiety and there's not many similar pics online.

Thanks in advance

Yes cold sore but you really really don’t need to worry.
Most kids will get them at some point. Your baby will have a great immune system to fight it off.

Doesn’t look like a cold sore to me. Do you want to talk through what you’re anxious about specifically OP?

Could be angular cheilitis as when I had that it looked similar, it can be a bit fungal and I put some anti fungal cream on mine and it cleared up, obviously don't do this with a baby, unless doctor says it's ok

OP google Angular Cheilitis. I get this in the corners of my mouth sometimes. It's usually linked to having a cold and sleeping with my mouth open and dribbling Blush l

Thank you all for your responses. I'm very much hoping that it's angular cheilitis.

@Wouldloveanother good question- mostly that it's going to spread and cause him pain, or he'll rub his mouth and then it'll pass into his eyes. I've seen the pictures of babies whose bodies are completely covered when they're little.

I feel so much guilt because at the weekend he was passed around family members, who were giving him kisses and cuddles, and I feel like I've let him down in not stopping them from kissing his face.

Yes used to get this occasionally too. Def not a cold sore in my case. Haven't had it in ages now though! But it used to be when the seasons changed weirdly,

Just wanted to say this thread has given me hope! My 11 month old came home from nursery with something that looked like this and I assumed she had a cold sore. I definitely felt sad as none of our family get cold sores so wss hopeful she hadn't caught the herpes virus after all at such a young age. She dribbles a lot due to teething and I'd never heard of angular cheilitis but now I'm wondering if (hoping!) she's had that instead.

I don't think it looks like a cold sore. I get them and have read quite a lot about it as worried so much that I'd pass it to my babies. My understanding is that the first infection with the virus tends to be like a general virus rather than one sore like that. If you get them you'll have passed some antibodies on, though by 6 months they may have run out! Please don't worry about family kissing him. If they didn't have an active cold sore it's unlikely to have been passed on like that. There is such a thing as viral shedding but it's very unlikely, it usually requires skin to skin contact around the mouth etc, so provided nobody kisses baby on the mouth with an active cold sore (which I'm sure you'd have noticed!) I'm sure it wouldn't be from that. Hope it clears up soon!

I don't think that is a cold sore but even if it is they are incredibly common and generally not at all dangerous.Restricting kisses and cuddles would be a shame , your baby is no longer a new born. Most of us are herpes positive anyone can shed the virus.

An update for any future parents going through the same thing - turns out it was angular cheilitis 😊😅Such a relief!
