How long did it take for your LO to get chicken pox after exposure?

My DS is 13mo, and we saw his cousin last Thursday, who on Friday was found to have chicken pox. The two days before spots appear they are said to be the most contagious. For those that have a good idea of when exposure was, how long afterwards did spots show up? NHS website says 1-3 weeks, but just wondering what everyone’s experience was. Am obviously worried about DS having chickenpox, but we are getting married in exactly three weeks and it’s wedding take two, after covid cancelled our first 😖

Definitely just over two weeks

Livinginanotherworld · 14/08/2022 15:51

I think it’s normally around the ten day mark.

Chdjdn · 14/08/2022 15:54

10 days for both of mine. Good luck OP

It can be anything from 1 -3 weeks but I understand day 14 is the most popular.

Get him vaccinated tomorrow. It can work even after exposure and even if not it will reduce the severity of the illness.

Gonnagetacatwhenimovein · 14/08/2022 16:01

2 weeks on the dot

MintGreenLife · 14/08/2022 16:01

@Twizbe oh really! I did think about whether the vaccination could help, but wasn’t sure if it was too late/if somehow it could make things worse?!

Just came on to say ‘Don't give ibuprofen’ during an illness of chicken pox
It can be very dangerous

randomsabreuse · 14/08/2022 16:32

Exactly 2 weeks here as well. Spectacularly good at tying you up for ages!

houseofboy · 14/08/2022 16:34

Sorry but my ds2 took 3 weeks to get from ds1 so really think there is no way to know. It also depends how bad they get it ds 2 we saw a couple of spots whilst out for the day that we thought were chicken pox spots but weren't entirely sure until 2 days late when he had loads.

Flockameanie · 14/08/2022 16:36

2 weeks for us too (siblings)

DramaAlpaca · 14/08/2022 16:37

Two weeks exactly on all three occasions.

Angelicapickles1 · 14/08/2022 16:40

DD got it 2 weeks exactly after DS had his first spot. It then took a further 10 days to all heal over and not be contagious.

MintGreenLife · 14/08/2022 18:58

Thanks everyone, seems mostly it’s around 2 weeks! Am just going to have to keep my fingers crossed that if he does get it it’s sooner rather than later, and that it’s not too bad for him! I’m still BF so it’s going to make things very complex if he can’t attend our wedding, and to be honest if he can’t be there I’ll feel completely devastated.

@NeedToLeaveNow do you know why this is? My understanding is that it’s when they have the spots/blisters as can cause skin infection? I’m just panicking a little now, as he does have a temperature today, but as far as we are aware he wasn’t exposed until this Thursday just gone. Paracetamol didn’t bring his temp down, so I have ibuprofen instead. He had his 12 month jabs 3 weeks ago tomorrow, and I was told the MMR could kick in between 1-3 weeks, so presumed this as no other symptoms, but there’s a very small chance he may have picked it up at the same time as his cousin as a soft play they went to together just over two weeks ago, however his cousin goes to nursery and so we thought that’s where he picked it up x

So it turned out he does have chicken pox!! I have no idea how that works as saw his cousin only a few days ago, they both must have picked it up a couple of weeks ago at a soft play they went to together 😖

Does anyone have any tips for managing it? He’s really poorly/upset 😭 in the last 15 hours he’s only slept 1 hour!! He naps well and sleeps well at night usually, but he’s just too uncomfortable I think and is having phases of inconsolable crying! Husband is out trying to find gels/creams/piriton!
