Baby lethargic in heat?

My 5 week old is much more lethargic than usual today and has been sleeping all morning and not wanting to feed (either breast or bottle as we are combination feeding). She has had a few small bottle feeds while half asleep but only because I woke her. Is this normal or should I call NHS 111? She doesn’t have a temperature and does feel sweaty unless she has been sleeping on me for awhile. Nappies still seem to be wet.

111 or your GP.

it’s likely to be the heat but I’d want someone medical to take a good look at her.

Could just be a growth spurt. As she is so little it couldn't hurt to call 111 for reassurance, then you can hear it from a doctor (they sometimes have a doctor call you back)

Thanks all. I phoned the GP and he looked at her via video call and thought everything was OK but will keep monitoring her anyway. Didn’t know growth spurts can make the sleepy.

Also for those of you that have a baby that normally contact naps during the day what are you doing in the hot weather? We were both getting sweaty so have popped her back in the Moses basket today. The house is 27-29 degrees with curtains closed and fan on.

When dd was small and needed constant contact I tried to rest her on pillows instead of directly on me in the heat and let her head rest on the crook of my arm. it’s hotter for you (stick your feet in a bowl of water) but it at least reduces the amount of direct body heat you’re exchanging. if she’s happy enough if the Moses basket go with that though!

I hope she perks up soon or at least accepting more fluids. Don’t hesitate to seek further advice later on or tomorrow if you’re still concerned.

Thanks again for your advice! She did eventually perk up and seems more normal after a period of almost 18 hr of being pretty lethargic. Doesn’t seem like it was just the heat as she was much more alert last night compared to the previous even though it was just as hot. Still keeping a close eye on her today just to be sure and will be looking out for the growth spurt.

Glad to hear it @trrk Smile

Its so hard when they’re not themselves, they don’t give you much to go off!

Glad she's perked up and you're doing the right thing in offering extra feeds.
