My 6 week old just had his health visitor come to the house, she did his weight and height, she was happy with it but now i think i am overthinking it but i am worried! He has gone up a weight percentile, he was on the 50th but now he looks to be between the 75th and 91st...i am worried he has gained to much to fast!! I also read somewhere that their weight and length should be similar, his length is between the 25th and 50th, these seem far apart?! Anyone else had any thing similar? Pic of weight chart attached as i am not the best at reading them!

Anywhere within the centiles is normal! My DD dropped a couple of centiles and we had a paediatrician go all panic stations on us insisting on top ups that were not the answer at all as they stressed her out to the point of not feeding at all. She’s now 6 months old and small but perfectly healthy, I wish I hadn’t listened to it all.

look at your baby, if he’s alert and healthy then I wouldn’t worry about the centiles too much.

DD never had her length measured so despite them worrying over her weight they never measured anything else to see if she was in proportion.

Anywhere in the percentiles is fine, better at that age to be higher than lower in most cases. He's doing just fine x

Thank you, he is a hungry baby with a very healthy appetite! I just worried as too much weight too quick i think can be a sign of underlying health issues, but your right i am just being a worry wart it's not like its off the charts!

Definitely better to be going up the centiles than down at this age! Also, babies' birth centiles don't always match their natural centiles as children – they might have been born a bit smaller than their genetics mean them to be, so they catch up once born, or vice versa. DD1 dropped quite a bit over her first 2-3 months, for example, but then settled beautifully onto her new line.

In terms of length and weight being in proportion, yes, absolutely when they're a bit older, but lots of babies put on weight quickly in babyhood (reserves in case they get ill) and then sort of stretch out once they get on the move. As long as you're following his lead when it comes to feeding or there are other signs of a problem, I really wouldn't worry he's gaining too fast.

My DS just turned 12 weeks and we have similar situation he gone up in weight percentile and stayed there but they are refusing to re measure him since his week 6 check. So I am not sure how we are looking lenght wise but we were behind during his 6 weeks check.

I’d honestly ignore centiles in a 6 week old unless they are plummeting.

DS was 50th centile when born, 75-91st for most of his first year, and now 9-25th centile aged 5 (short parents, that is more in keeping with genetics than 91st centile was). They move around a lot in the first year.

Anywhere between the upper and lower centiles is fine, when a baby starts to drop or gain centiles rapidly they tend to keep an eye on it. Are you breast or formula feeding? It’s easier to over feed with formula vs breastmilk as a baby has less control with a bottle x

Cluelessfirstimer · 19/08/2022 18:05

My boy was on the 2nd percentile at birth and now at 10 weeks has gone up to the 25th HV said as long as they stay between the percentiles its all fine. Lenth he was 25th at birth and again she said all normal and fine - she said she has found babies under the 50th go up quickly then slow down a bit about 3 months. My baby is also one hungry baba!

Don't stress at all - as the pp's say its better to be going up but even going down doesn't mean its time to panic
