Baby and worms

I have a 4 month old baby and yesterday my friend brought her new puppy round mine to show him
off during my DD nap time. Anyway was playing with the pup and my daughter woke up
so I ran up and put her dummy in. Of course hindsight I should of washed my hands but I didn’t think and placed her dummy in to see if she’d go back off as she slept awful the night before. Today my friends just told me her puppy has worms, so I was wondering what is the transition likelihood with dogs and infecting humans with worms. Well any parasite really. We’d been considering a dog but now rethinking lol. Would like to add I didn’t touch the teat of the dummy, just the side. Any help so I don’t turn into a stressy mess?

I think it's highly unlikely that you've transferred any worm eggs to your daughter especially if you didn't touch the teat but I would probably ask the HV/GP about it. Have you had her 16 week jabs yet, that could be a good opportunity?

Foreveranxious22 · 09/08/2022 21:33

Thank you for your reply! Yes she had her jabs. Would the pharmacist know maybe? Or even our vets as we have rabbits? Never thought I’d be worried about it this when having children lol 🤦🏼‍♀️

Pharmacist is a good shout! I'd ask them. I'm sure it'll be fine but I totally get why you're worried about it. Fingers crossed it's all ok.

If she does have worms (no shame here, we’ve got dogs and horses, and all mine have had worms at some point as have I the alleged adult) then it’s just an oral medicine you give her with a syringe. This isn’t a third world country, worms are easy treated and it’s not possible to wash your hands when your four miles in the middle of nowhere down the horsefield. It’s unlikely though.

If she does have worms then you will soon know when you change her nappy when she does a poo as they will be tiny white dots and you might see white bits on her bottom and they might move but don’t panic as they are called thread worms.

My daughter caught them when she was at nursery and we all had to take the one off medicine which we got from the pharmacy and that was the last she saw of them .

However your baby is very young so if your worried then call your GP but try not too worry.

HighlandPony · 14/08/2022 00:48

It will be round worm or tape worm in a dog not thread worm. Most likely roundworm.

But if passed onto a child then it would be a thread worm especially in a small baby.

HighlandPony · 14/08/2022 01:09

It’s not. Thread worms are pin worm or strongyloides. Roundworm are toxicara canis. Cat roundworms are toxicara cati and both can cause toxocariasis. Threadworms are just an itchy pest. Tapeworm different again. They are segmented

avamiah · 14/08/2022 01:21

So you think a 4 month old baby can have a tape worm?
I don’t think so .

I personally hope the little baby doesn’t have any worms.

Google suggests it's possible depending on the type of worm.

Foreveranxious22 · 14/08/2022 08:11

Thank you all for your replies! I calmed down a bit after my initial thread and have been checking her poop. So far everything seems fine. Like I originally said it was just the side of the dummy so I do think the chances are really low. I did research it and it seems you would need to have touched the infected poo and got it in your mouth somehow (🤮) to have the most chance of catching anything. Is this right do you reckon?
i work in a nursery and we had a child with worms once, years ago and we were recommend to take worm medicine as a precaution as we had been changing their nappy. So I do know it can happen and I’m now just realising that kids can just be gross and to just roll with the punches and not stress 😂

A four minute old baby can have tape worm. Mostly in developing countries. I’ve seen it working in India.
