What would you do - lopsided breasts?

Hi there,

I've been EBF for 10 months with the idea that I will continue for at least a year. I BF first thing in the morning, before bed and once in the afternoon. I was planning to drop the afternoon feed soon as baby is eating well otherwise, but wanted to continue with the other two until he's at least a year old.

However, a couple of weeks ago a milk duct in my right breast got inflamed and as a result, the breast stopped producing milk. It's essentially absolutely given up on BF! I have been putting baby on it for extended periods of time, trying out different poses, expressing etc, but to no avail.

The left breast is still going strong though, getting very full in the mornings and evenings. This means I still manage to BF my baby successfully, however my breasts are VERY lopsided... I used to have very very tiny breasts before BF, and during it they got 3x bigger. My right one has returned to its pre-BF size, but my left one is 3x bigger than the other. Because of this, there is a very obvious difference in their size and I am getting very self conscious as even wearing a normal top makes it very visibly strange. On top of that, we are going away on a summer holiday next week when I will be wearing swimsuits, summer dresses etc. I am thinking whether I should just accept that my BF journey is over, or pull through with just the one breast.

What would you do in my situation?

I would keep breastfeeding if I'm otherwise happy to continue it and wear a bra that fits the big boob and add chicken fillets to the smaller boob.
You can stop if you want to though.

I don't have any advice on what to do in the meantime (other than use padding like previous poster suggested) but just wanted to say that I was in a similar situation with a massive case of lopsidedness and things did go back to normal within a couple weeks of stopping BF so don't feel like you're destined to be stuck this way forever.

Hi OP! I'm also a one-sided breastfeeder! One breast always had more milk than the other and my baby always preferred it, and eventually stopped feeding on the other side. He's 18 months now, and we happily just ignore the other one. There was a big difference in sizes between breasts, but after 12 months, this settled down. There is still a difference, but not so obvious anymore. If you'd like to continue breastfeeding, I expect things will settle down for you too, as your baby eats more solids and naturally reduces milk intake a little.

I’m now at 13 months EBF and my left side has given up! I’ve just accepted it’s not needed anymore 😂 it’s always been an under-performer. I’m getting married in three weeks though, and like you now have one boob much bigger than the other 🤦🏻‍♀️

I fed on one side for about 2 years and was lopsided. Finished feeding about 18 months ago and I'm back to being equal again!

Thank you for your comments and suggestions - all very helpful! Looks like this is not an uncommon problem after all, so I will just continue breastfeeding and being lopsided until our BF comes to a more natural end (if such a thing exists lol). Until then, I will be investing in some bra padding.😁
