Going out when baby is having baby formula

Hi ladies need some advice please

Baby is having Kendamil formula, powder needs to be added to boiled water that’s 70 degrees. I feel like we can’t really go out because what equipment can I use to keep the water at 70 degrees? Or do people get some boiled water at a cafè and wait for it to cool down before adding the powder?

Advice please. Thank you in advance 👍🏻

You put a bit of boiling water into the powder, then shake, then add cooler water to make it up to the level.

Skinnermarink · 08/08/2022 21:09

Of course you can go out.

you can take a thermos of boiled water, or you can ask a cafe, or you can take ready made bottles, or you can make a bottle at home and keep it in a cool bag. Lots of options. You certainly don’t need to stay close to home for the sake of formula.

I just carry a vacuum flask of boiling water, nhs advice is it's good for 4 hours.

You can buy ready mixed nowcan’t you ?
I just went out with ready mixed powder bottles and gave at room temp or slightly warm but this was 15 plus years ago.

As above - you can get powder pits so it’s all portioned out and have cooled boiled water - to be proper you add a shot of boiled water to the milk to kill any bugs in the powder. So to speak.

Tommee tippee make a good flask for taking out with you.

Skinnermarink · 08/08/2022 21:12

Yes Mam do a good pre-portioned powder container. Bit if I’m planning on being out all day I take clean empty bottles and buy ready made cartons. I know Kendamil don’t do those- Hipp is very similar.

When my DD was newborn and her feeding was more unpredictable I used the ready made bottles when out and about. However she had to go onto a specialised formula after a while and it doesn’t have the ready made bottles, so I take a Thermos flask with me and make up bottles when out and get them cooled in a jug of water in a cafe, or access a cold tap to cool it under. It gets easier as they get older - DD is 4 months now and feeds roughly every 3 hours, so I can get prepping when I know she’s due a feed.
There is a piece of equipment called the Nuby rapid cooler, we got one as a gift when she was born. Its a kind of flask type container which you add your boiling water and formula powder to and it somehow cools the feed very quickly and a digital lid tells you when it’s at a drinkable temp. The downside to it is that it needs to be washed and sterilised between each use so you only can use it once on a day out. But it’s handy to have it sterilised and in the changing bag when out in case of not being able to get it cooled down normally.

I used ready made mostly but the times I ran out I would make up bottles, cool them and put them in a cool bag with an ice pack, they're good in there for 4 hours

Hugasauras · 08/08/2022 21:29

Kendamil do do ready made bottles but they are a bugger to get a hold of as they're always sold out. Tesco and Savers stock them.

I never knew that!! I must have been in about a hundred supermarkets all over London and never once seen them. Kendamil formula is usually sold out too.

Nuby rapid cool - lifesaver

MiddleParking · 08/08/2022 21:48

I make bottles up fully with boiling water, put seals and lids on and stick them in the change bag. They’re usually just the right temperature when I need them.

Babyboomtastic · 09/08/2022 08:19

I made them in advance and quickly cooled them under running water, then stored in the back of the fridge for 24hrs. I took them out in an insulated container (tommee tippee do them) and one of their baby warmer flasks.

Making them up in advance is a safe method according to the WHO, and is a lot easier and more practical. We went out on day trips, weekends away, holidays etc from when the baby was about a week old, and it worked fine.

Ps: they say 70 degrees to legally cover yourself in case you burn yourself on boiling water. Even though everyone uses boiling water to make tea/coffee and cooking. You don't need to wait for the water to cool.

Lilbunnyfufu · 09/08/2022 08:32

I buy ready made milk to take on days out DS drinks it without it being warmed up.

gogohmm · 09/08/2022 08:33

When mine were small people made a days worth each morning and stored in the fridge. You could buy bottle bags that held two bottles and an ice pack for travel. Reheat by standing in hot water or teach them to drink it cold (dp tells me his DD's always had cold bottles)

Skinnermarink · 09/08/2022 08:46

DS will only drink bottles cold from the fridge- it cuts a lot of the faff.

gotelltheoldmandowntheroad · 09/08/2022 09:22

they don't do made up ones to take with you? Shame.
It needs to be boiling to kill bacteria in the formula powder, so as long as you get boiling water on that from a cafe or anywhere (say it's for baby they will fall over themselves) and kill the bacteria then top up with cooler water from a flask. Which you can also use boiled water for that to kill impurities in the water itself also.

TiredEyes1991 · 09/08/2022 10:38

youve got a couple of options

take 1 flask of boiling hot water and 1 flask of cooled water. If they take 7oz for example, you’d put 3oz of hot and 4oz of cooled

you could pre measure a couple of bottles of boiling water and take them but if it’s still too hot when the baby is hungry you then have to faff around with finding somewhere to cool it down. Option 1 is so easy!

third option they do sell kendamil ready made bottles (they don’t come with teats) but my LO didn’t like them because they’re a lot sweeter I found. Plus they’re hard to get hold of

shivawn · 09/08/2022 11:39

I just make up one right before I leave the house and make sure to use it within 2 hours. I always have ready made bottles on standby in the baby bag too.
