DS scratched glasses...

DS fell off his scooter today and scratched his glasses. Does anyone know if I will need to pay for the repair of it as his glasses were covered under the NHS, though we paid to have the lenses thinned. TIA x

I believe you are covered for a repair if you go back to the optician you got them from.

One time my DS completely lost his and they were replaced FOC

Thank you! Wow that's brilliant to be FOC. I'm really worried as they were £60 including the nhs voucher as we had them thinned and it's really tight over the holidays, an extra £60 really isn't ideal! Xxx

We get 2 pairs a year and one pair is fixed under NHS, one pair fixed by us. F these are his NHS then you'll he fine

They are NHS but we had to pay on top of the voucher to have the lenses thinned as he has a strong prescription and this was £60 ( inclusive of the voucher, it would have been more if we didn't have the NHS contribution ) x

I spent the first few years of my DD's glasses wearing career going back and forth to the optician with bags of bits - she was a toddler when she first had them so was pretty gung-ho with them. All repairs and replacements were free.

Just so you know for the future, Asda do lense thinning free if you are over a certain prescription.

That’s brilliant, I hadn’t realised! My frames are always dirt cheap, it’s the thinning that bumps it up to silly prices!

Gizlotsmum · 08/08/2022 21:20

Of it’s just scratched lenses (and he has a spare pair) they might be able to reuse the frames and change the lenses, should be free, although dependant on recall for test may need another eye test

maltesersarethedevil · 08/08/2022 21:22

Lenses would be replaced under the nhs but only to standard thickness. If you've paid to have the thinned you would most likely have to pay for thinning again.

imtherebutimnotthere · 08/08/2022 21:24

Unfortunately you will still need to pay the extra £60 if you want them thinned down again, that is assuming the extra money was for the lenses.
A NHS repair voucher only covers standard lenses.
There are some Opticians that give a thinner lenses with your optical NHS voucher but the Opticians you have used don't...hence the extra charge.

I thought as much. I totally understand it's just frustrating and I don't want him to be laughed at with super thick lenses so I guess I'll be shelling out for new ones 😩🙈

It's so frustrating as kids will always have accidents with their glasses, if his prescription is quite high he might be in a higher band of a NHS voucher ( band B ) some Opticians will give you thinner lenses free as the monetary value of the voucher is higher, as someone mentioned Asda do this.

We went with Specsavers and sadly, though we had free frames the thinned lenses cost £60 ( which I thought was quite pricey!) but there we go! Kids and their scooters eh?!

DD (under 16) broke new glasses after 7 days last week. We paid £10 for an nhs repair voucher at her original store (branch of boots).

Did she have thinned lenses on her original pair? Xx

I have pretty sparse centers between my pupils and have to purchase custom glasses. I used to be able to buy pre-made products, but now they are no longer available. Recently I was recommended to read about Ocuwear. They say they have a pretty good selection of glasses and can help me pick them out.
