Taking baby on London Underground in heat wave?

I have to go to London on Saturday and it's due to be 34 degrees. I remember the underground being very warm during heatwaves (but it's been years since I've been to London so don't know if they've updated them). Is that still the case? Worried about taking my 7mo.

Circle line will be fine, it has AC. We were on the central at the weekend (hot) and the circle (fine). Or walk as others have suggested.

Whats your journey OP, perhaps us London mums can advise the best way especially with a buggy?

Rosiestraws · 09/08/2022 17:38

As others have said - circle line has air con and isn't that hot in my experience - district, circle, hammersmith & city and metropolitan are all fine as they have air con.. not sure if others do.

Agree central line is awful though!

As PPs have said it shouldn’t be hot on the tube itself but that is a fairly busy section of the line. Lots of people going to the museums.
If you have a buggy you have to carry it up and down stairs too. If you’re arriving into Paddington main line it’s down the stairs, along the tunnel then more stairs. With a buggy I’d definitely walk across the park. Lots of things for the baby to look at including fountains and squirrels!

A tube with AC is going to be infinitely better than walking or getting the bus. Bus is far worse than the tube ime.

Thanks for your replies... I did it and it went well! Thanks to those who pointed out that the line was air conditioned, because it was and it was very easy. Only one more day hopefully of this ridiculous heat!

Your biggest issue will be getting up the steps at SK with a buggy on a Saturday along with the million other buggys trying to do the exact same thing up a very narrow staircase, alongside the other 1000s of older kids and tourists to add into the mix. Your only saving grace is that it isn't a weekday then you'd have all of that plus annoyed commuters trying to get up/down to catch mainline trains.

Circle line will be fine, it has air con and wide new trains.

Ah just seen your latest post (didn't load on my phone) - well done!!

I work at SK and the station layout is horrendous given how much of a tourist honeypot it is, can't wait for the long awaited rebuild to begin. As a mum to a toddler myself I try to be patient as I know what it's like but by the same token there's only so many times that you can miss a tube train due to buggies taking up the entire staircase which then means you miss your mainline train without getting slightly annoyed at them.... Commuters generally use Gloucester Road for that reason in the school holidays, particularly if they also have to navigate Exhibition Road 😭
