21 month old screaming at night terrifying

Just after some advice really. 21 month old DS has been a terrible sleeper until we moved him into a cot bed and out of his sleeping bag. So the past 2 weeks have been the best sleep we have EVER had.

However on 2 nights now me and DH have been woken up by the most horrendous screaming from DS. The type of screaming that instantly gets your heart beat racing and adrenaline pumping. He won't he held, cuddled or consoled. We can't pick him up as he arches his back and kicks with his legs. We have literally had to put him on the carpet and he thrashes out. It almost seems like he is possessed. It is terrifying to see. He almost seems angry and he throws things like his dummy across the room. DS is really verbal and communicates well (he can talk in simple sentences Mummy more milk. Mummy find car. Go in garden etc) but during these episodes he can't communicate at all.

We've tried different things to snap him out of it, lights on, drinks, moving rooms, music, reading books etc but both times these have lasted about half an hour. Half an hour of red raw screaming (crying too).

Last night we eventually calmed him down and kept him in our bed with us.

Does anyone have any experience of this? Is he scared of his room? Night terrors? Although perhaps too young? He's not ill in anyway.
It has really upset me. This morning he's back to his normal cheeky self! Any advice would be greatly appreciated x

My DB had exactly the same as a kid and it was night terrors. It's absolutely frightening!

DS had this too, night terrors. We eventually managed to pick him up through the thrashing and press him against our bodies to rock him, that seemed to calm him more quickly. Its very scary! DS's passed fairly quickly - they lasted about 2 weeks - hope yours does too.

Night terrors, they’re bloody scary. DD had them for a while. She never remembered anything if that helps at all. Cuddling her once possible usually meant she fell asleep once they stopped quickly.

My daughter had these and still does on occasion at nearly 3. Her whole body shakes its awful. She seems unaffected though when awake.
