How much would you pay a child for watering plants

Sorry if this is wrong section but we've had a neighbours child water our plants for 5 days and we were going to give him £20, but is that too much? He is 12 and he watered our garden and lot's of hanging baskets.

Definitely not too much, it's 4 pounds a day.

JasmineVioletRose · 07/08/2022 07:02

I'm paying £5 a day for neighbors, kids to feed my cat. They need to go in twice though.

avamiah · 07/08/2022 07:08

Why would you think it’s too much ?
He is 12 not 5 .

I would pay him £25 as in £5 per day.
My daughter is 13 soon and and she wouldn’t water a neighbours garden and hanging baskets for £4 a day .
I’m sorry but £4 wouldn’t even buy her a bubble tea here in London nor a drink from Starbucks.

That is Life I’m afraid to say .

I pay local teenagers £5 per day for any kind of short daily visit eg cat feeding, plant watering etc.

Ontomatopea · 07/08/2022 07:15

£20 sounds good

dizzydizzydizzy · 07/08/2022 07:19

Ig depends how long it takes and where you live.

If it's 5 mins a day in the North - sounds generous.

If it's 20 mins a day in London - sounds like far too little

transformandriseup · 07/08/2022 07:21

I wouldn't pay less than £20, it's only £4 per day.

FourChimneys · 07/08/2022 07:30

DD used to be paid £10 a day for plant watering. Quite a few pots and some vegetables.

Mackers123 · 07/08/2022 08:12

Thanks all. I'm clueless as don't have kids. Good to get feed back

£5 day

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 07/08/2022 08:17

I'd up it to £25 minimum.

WinterMusings · 07/08/2022 08:19

No, it doesn't sound 'too much' 🙄🙄

he watered your garden & lots of pots! If they were in good health when you got back id pay him £10 per day!

RosaBaby2 · 07/08/2022 08:38

Paid my friends 16 year old £5 a day to feed my cats for a week. Friend has helped and normally does it for free so he's more than happy with that!

Bimblybomeyelash · 07/08/2022 08:49

I think any less than £5 per day is too little. And he won’t do it again when you next go away!

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 07/08/2022 09:09

I seem to be in the minority but think £20-25 is plenty.
It's nice that the kid is willing to do it - I know my privileged neighbour kid wouldn't even consider this as she's a snooty little shit.

DD is going to really struggle with the concept of minimum wage being under £5 an hour for the next 5 years then. It's not helpful to equate an hourly wage or payment for work to an over priced drink which a huge proportion of the working population could not afford.

Cost/Benefit. What are your plants worth dead or alive?

Our new neighbour planted a new flower bed before going on holiday. Asked us to water the plants. The bed in the front, tap in the back. Rather than carry the watering can back and forth several trips a day we used a hose twice a day for 10 days.

We didn't expect anything for our efforts and our expectations were not exceeded. Never spoke again.

Sorry if I misunderstand but you are an adult and your adult neighbour asked you to water plants, you agreed and didn't expect anything in response, then you did it and they didn't pay you, as expected.

And now you are not speaking for some reason I can't understand?

For the OP, I used to garden for my neighbour as an older teenager, I charged 4 pounds an hour (and did gardening in blocks of 75 minutes for them) but they always tried to knock me down to 3 pounds an hour!
I think it's a good idea asking around you may be best off sounding out the parents as well, as teenagers may either under or over sell themselves, and you clearly want to be fair .
