Can't get medicine in my toddler

He has a fever and has had a cold on and off for weeks now...just as he seems to be getting better, it comes back.
He does 1 day a week at Nursery, so obviously trying to build the immune system, but I understand will take longer due to only doing one day.
He won't take any medicine, I have to hide it in his milk or in a yogurt...when he will eat it.
Only thing is, he is being sick with the phlegm on his chest, so it's basically not doing anything.

Will a temp go away on its own?
I just don't know what to do for the best, he has spouts of being more himself and then he is just lay on the sofa feeling rubbish.

You simply get the medicine in a syringe, put your legs over his knees so he he will swallow. Don’t fanny about or guilt trip yourself. Give the kid medicine swiftly.!

Honestly, unless the temp is super high, with a child who is refusing and becoming distressed, I wouldn't worry about giving medicine - a high temp is the body's way of fighting illness. Obviously it's nicer for them if you can make them feel better, but it won't cause too much harm if you can't.

However, if the temp is super high, 39 or above, I'd be taking a no nonsense approach, wrap in a towel, syringe into the back of the cheek, blow in the face to get to swallow, and then a chocolate button as a reward.

Does he still have bottles ? Fill the teat with the medicine and maybe he will suck it from that.

I used to get one dose in when they were asleep with a syringe.

WhatIsModeration · 06/08/2022 20:24

You have to put the medicine in a syringe and push the syringe into the corner of their mouth. Sounds brutal but that's what the doctor at the hospital told me to do when my toddler wouldn't take his antibiotics. It works.

He just sicks it back up, so none of those are going to work

I have the same problem with DD. She recently had covid and was really poorly and we tried all the tips the PP have suggested but she would just gag it all back up. I ended up getting a prescription for paracetamol pessaries which are so much easier. They did tell me they'd only prescribe once and then I'd have to buy them. They're £25 for 10 from the pharmacy so super expensive...

keep an eye on his temp with a thermometer - cool him down In other ways like a fan and no clothes. Ring 111 and find out what temperature is acceptable - if it creeps up to unacceptable temperature then he may need to see a doctor.

Not the best advice tbh, why make the child more distressed?

Put the medicine in a yoghurt or juice.

Orangesare · 06/08/2022 21:19

Offer him something he really likes afterwards such as a sweet.

M0m23 · 06/08/2022 21:20

Thank you for those other people's advice.
I will speak to a doctor and see what they advise as the last time I took him it was useless and they did nothing

Do you mean medicine to get his temperature down eg paracetamol? You can get suppositories of paracetamol for children. Get advice from a pharmacist too.

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 06/08/2022 21:22

Ask doctor to prescribe suppositories if it's calpol you're giving - or is it different medication?
