Would you allow your child in a very large swimming pool unattended in a back garden of a person you know from
School but not overly well?

Not in a million years, and those of you saying you would need some water safety education.

I'd not let a teenager swim in a pool where there wasn't somebody responsible on the deck 'spotting'. It doesn't have to be a lifeguard, just somebody not involved in goofing around who has a chance of seeing a problem in time.

No. I'm a lifeguard. Children do some stupid stuff.

It depends on the age of the child and the depth of the pool. We have one and the majority of 6 year olds can stand in it (even if on tippy toes)

We do supervise, as in we’re in The kitchen looking out on the garden but they’re all just told to put their feet down

I'm a lifeguard and have rescued several children in a 75cm-deep pool. They were all tall enough to stand up it. Some children and (occasionally adults too) don't seem to understand how to stand up in a pool once they are face down. I don't know why.

Also, children (and again also some adults) do some really stupid stuff like diving into shallow water. Anyone doing that is at risk of a spinal cord injury, which can mean you lose the use of your arms and legs.

And then there is all the horseplay - ducking people under, pushing and shoving, jumping into the pool backwards etc etc etc

Even my nearly 14 year old I'd be iffy, esp if with a group of friends so likely to be silly. At 6 not in a million yrs

Thus seems extraordinary we live on the coast, Dd (15) has been swimming in the sea with her mates nearly everyday this holiday. These are beaches she has known since she could walk. I would certainly let her use a mate's pool. She is a stronger swimmer than me and has been since she was about 12. At 6 of course not.
