Will my brand new baby need a passport to take a domestic flight? And how long do passport apps take?

We've been invited to a wedding in Scotland around a month after my EDD. I've told the bride we'd love to be there, but we'll have to play it by ear as to how I'm getting on (it's my first, so I really have NO idea)

But presumably he/she will need a passport for security (world gone mad emoticon).

Do these take ages to sort?

Thanks for your help

no you just need some form of id such as birth certificate.

Octothechildherder · 19/01/2008 19:32

Yes - will need passport. Get photo done asap after birth and do the two week thing through the post office. You are cutting it fine

I thought all flights required a passport now

Where are you? Wouldn't it be nicer to go on the train?

Surely a passport is the only photo-approved id you can have for a baby.

Best bet is check with the airline - I think all domestic flights require photo-id now, so yes you will need a passport.

I know when we applied for ds's I sent form away on the tuesday, passport arrived on the saturday, think it wasSept though so out of peak seaon?

Didn't think children , especially infants , needed own photo id as long as you had birth cert and parent had some.

Easyjet regulations

"Children under 16 years of age travelling on UK, Italian, Spanish, or French domestic flights can travel without photo identification provided that they are travelling with an accompanying adult."

We flew with DS just over a year ago from London to Edinburgh with Easyjet. He was 6mths old and didn't have a passport. He didn't need any ID at all. My 3 yr old DD also didn't need any ID although we took her passport just in case. Because you're flying internally there is no need to have a passport and children do not have any other form of photo ID (driving licence etc) so the airlines can't demand any ID.

I don't think babies can fly straight after they are born either. I'm sure I saw on TV (that Airline programme!) that they had to be at least 2 weeks old. If your baby is late arriving you may not be able to fly there anyway. You should check that out too.
