Restless newborn sleep

So FTM .. I've been told newborns are restless sleepers due to their sleep cycles.

But what's normal, when to pick up, when to leave alone and when are they actually unwell.l or uncomfortable... Its a minefield.

We are dealing with potential silent reflux and he has horrible gas that really irritates him so I'm on edge that he's OK anyway

My baby boy literally thrashes about in his crib a LOT. And whimpers. He will then be silent for about 5 10 minutes and go again. I jump up awake obviously for him to then zonk out again. Probably been guilty of picking him up and fucking his whole cycle up on numerous occasions

It's just so hard to tell! Esp as the HV told me crying is the last resort in terms of when he wants feeding and to not let it get to that so each time I'm looking over the crib for hunger cues but then he will spot me and actually wake up and cry.

Sorry few typos in there... I'm typing this at midnight watching him thrash around...

DD often calms just with me resting a hand on her or gently stroking her tummy or arm, just a kind of reassurance that I'm near I think. We cosleep so it's a bit easier for me to respond quickly before it escalates, but maybe worth a try just some gentle physical contact without picking up to see if that settles him. If he's unhappy/hungry then it will escalate.
