What should LO speech be like at 30 months?

Hi,

DD is 30 months and just wondering about her speech and some concerns I have had.
I just wanted to ask everyone for advice and thoughts and to see what others LO speech is like, to see if of DD is kind of in the same area.
I’ve broken it down to make it easier:

What DD does do:

  • has lots of words, including describing words and all used in context. E.g it’s floating, it’s higher, bigger, little.
  • has some sentences up to 4 words such as I don’t like it, I see it, need a wee wee, where’s daddy gone. Should this be more advanced now?
  • asks what, where questions and has started with why questions this week.
  • can answer questions such as where is teddy or what is Mammy pointing at in a book.
  • pretend plays well.

What she can’t do

  • speech is very unclear still and struggles with p,d,m sounds such as dedda dig for peppa pig and dig doat for big boat, is this typical for 30 months?
  • is not overly forthcoming when talking, I tend to ask questions first, she does initiate speech though and will talk to me about very things.
  • there’s not loads of back and forth conversation, are your LO’s doing this? If so have you examples?

Any advice would be great as I’m really worrying,

Thanks
Xx

This sounds similar to my DC at about 2.5 years. My speech therapist friend told me to just repeat words back to DC when she pronounced the sounds incorrectly.

2 1/2 is perhaps the age with the greatest variation in speech which is still within the 'normal' boundaries. This can mean there are some children of this age who have only a few words and some would be speaking clearly in full sentences, along with everything in between.
Your DD sounds absolutely fine, this is where I would expect the average 2 1/2 year old to be (I work in early years)

I'm an SLT. It sounds fine to me. I'm looking for 3-4 word phrases. Being unclear and not being able to pronounce certain sounds is normal at 2. OldGrey's advice is good.
