Weaning 7mo off dummy?

Please no judgment. You do what you have to do ! I just really don’t want my DS with a dummy after 1

Mainly because I’ve seen kids who continue dummy use (for example his 3 yo cousin who refuses to give it up now) and there’s speech problems, teeth problems and a big underbite

Someone suggested a comforter and we have one but how do I get him to use this instead of the dummy? He has the dummy for naps and bedtime and usually after 20 mins spits it out. I try not to give it to him while he’s just sat playing or calm. I will give him it if he cries a bit but now worried this means he’s associated any cry with it

any tips please?? Again please don’t judge I just don’t want him with it for long I’d like to wean him off ASAP (for comfort I’d be happy to do other things! But now he’s got it for sleep he needs something different)

If your 7 month old has a dummy for sleep it will not affect their speech, teeth or jaw. That is only possible with almost all day use.
If you want to remove it then you just need to take it away, at 7 months you can’t explain it to them or make them understand in anyway. You also can’t make them switch to a comforter if they aren’t interested. Some babies take to a comforter and some don’t, just like some take to a dummy or sucking their thumb.
Personally I would keep it for sleep for the next year until you can explain it and remove it, if they take a dummy it does wonders for sleep and helps them to self settle.
If you take it away you will probably have a few bad nights of sleep, hopefully he will forget about it soon.
When my 12mo wakes in the night she finds her dummy, puts it back in and goes back to sleep so you need to reach a point where he can go back to sleep with no dummy.

Meh. My 10 year old had one until he was 4. No issues caused and it was a massive source of comfort for him.

I agree with pp that having at night time / nap time only won't cause issues with his teeth or speech. Just be very strict about never giving it to him during the day. If you take it away he may start thumb sucking and that's harder for you to control!
