Nappy virgin - wanna go cloth - advice please

Hi my dd is coming up to 8 months and is costing me a fortune in nappies. Wanna switch to cloth but not sure what to go for. I looked before she was born but obviously she needs something different now.

  1. I need something that dries mega quick - got hardly any drying space.
  2. Nappy that doesnt make her little bum look huge, though she mainly wears dresses so not too much of a problem.
  3. Shes tall and a bit chubby not sure if that makes a difference.
  4. And most of all got to be DH and grandparent proof lol!

What do you suggest!?!?!?!

we use prefolds they dry really easily on a radiator over night or in a couple of hours on the line in the garden.
have a look at thenappylady.co.uk she has some good tips for starting out.

If you need something quick drying then you cannot beat microfibre shaped two part nappies or pocket nappies.

Microfibre is a manmade fibre which is an issue for some people (not me ). It will come out of your washing machine almost dry which is fab. It is very absorbant too.

A shaped two part nappy will need a wrap over the top to keep it waterproof - motherease rikki or airflow wraps are the most reliable for most people. With shaped nappies (i.e those that look like a disposable made from cloth) chubbiess is not too much of a problem but the tallness will mean you need a nappy with a decent rise.

Downsides are some brands of shaped MF nappies are a bit bulky under clothes.

Pocket nappies are a waterproof bit with a fleece bit inside - between the two parts is a pocket into which you can stuff whatever you like. You stuff the pocket and put the on the baby. Take the insert out when you wash and wash both the insert and the nappy in the same way. The nappy bit dries very quickly without tumbling and if you use microfibre inserts they will too. These are easy to put on as only one piece but they can be prone to leaking if the fit doesn't suit your DDs shape. Pocket nappies are usually thin fitting and you can boost the pocket as needs dictate so for a long journey just pop in two boosters etc

Microfibre can hold smells if you don't do a cold rinse in your machine before you wash them. Doesn't happen all the time but some people have problems with this when their LOs are teething etc and the urine is more strong than usual.

For grandparent and DH proof nappies go for velcro (aka aplix) fit. Two part nappies and pocket nappies are just as easy to put on IMO despite one being only one piece to attach to baby!

Have you looked to see if you have a local nappy project that you can hire to try out and see what suits best. Also your council may offer you financial incentives to change to cloth.

Lots of good advice to be found on here

Weenees dry super quickly (they have a microfibre inner) and a very trim - almost as slim fitting as a disposable.

We have used them and liked them.

sorry, that link is not quite right, but click on 'weenees' on the left of the page, near the top

Nataz26 · 18/01/2008 23:54

Thanks coby. I think I prefer the sound of pocket ones, whats the new fuzzi bunz like, I read on here that they are bringing a new one out?
Unfortunately my council is pants and offers nothin'!!! There are a few trail people but wanted to know what other mums thought, rather than being trapped in a room with a mountain of nappies and not a clue as to what actually works!

As for the smell, cant be any worse than the lingering smell of dirty nappies in her room lol! Babies should come supplied with pegs for mummys nose...

What are the best pockets nappies?

re pocket nappies - we liked Swaddlebees the best, (although we had more leaking accidents with them than weenees), and they are quite trim, and very easy for DH/gradparents to use if you make them up first

Nataz26 · 18/01/2008 23:56

weenes - are they just a wrap type thing??? Yuk not sure about the compost idea!

Astrophe · 18/01/2008 23:56

We didn't get on with fuzzis - lots of leaks. DS is medium height, chubby.

Nataz26 · 18/01/2008 23:58

I would have to buuy two sizes in the weenes though, shes about 19lbs at the mo.
What are swaddlesbees like?

have another look - you can either use the bidegradable disposable inserts, or folded microfibre cloths.

They are a cotton cover, with a pop - in waterproof pouch, then the microfibre cloth or disposable pad inside.

If the nappy is just wet, you just change the cloth, if its pooey, you can pop out the pouch and change it too, and if poo is on the cotton bit (the coloured bit), you change it all, obviously.

Lollipops will come and demonstrate them for you if you ask them.

I think you would get away with one size of weenees , they are very adjustable with velcro.

With any nappies though, buy the bigger size, and if it turns out to be too big, you can always out it away for later and buy the small.

If you get the small straight away though, it may be too small, or you may only use them for a month, and you can't return nappies once used.

Swaddlebees have poppers on the sides (3 sets, so reasonably adjustable, though not as much as weenees), you fill them with a sweddlebees insert or a microfibre cloth or whatever. One advantage is you can use them as pull ups.

Maybe get one of a few types you like the look of, and then decide?

Nataz26 · 19/01/2008 00:04

Both those sound good, will defo get someone to come out though. Shame about the sizes, dont wanna have to get a new set after just a few months.

Nature Babies micro diddy diapers are a slim microfibre nappy

Willowwisp · 19/01/2008 21:47

Bumgenius for me to! They are brilliant, dry really quickly and very slimline, plus they are birth to potty sized as well so you will only need to get them once! Everytime my daughter did a poo she exploded out of disposables, we have not had one accident in Bumgenius!

If you put a search in you will see most companies are doing buy one get one free on the V2's and the new V3's are coming out, I've just bought 20 of them and they cost me £140 which I think is a bargain!

Nataz26 · 20/01/2008 10:37

Willow - did you buy the v3's? want to know whether its worth getting them or the v2's on special

OP posts:
Nappyzone · 20/01/2008 11:02

i would personally snap up the v2's while they are on offer.... v3's r good though but the 2's are a steal...

Nataz26 · 20/01/2008 11:12

Think I'm gonna. Is it worth getting an advisor to come visit so I can see the nappy first???

OP posts:
Nataz26 · 20/01/2008 11:21

Plus I use about 5-6 disposables at the most each day, so would how many nappies should I get? Gonna wash every other day I think.
Is it worth getting liners to catch the poos?

OP posts:
Nappyzone · 20/01/2008 12:40

I personally wouldnt bother with liners in something like a bumgenius or any nappy really at 8 months as the poo should just peel of on a more solid day. If you are using disp overnight till your more confident i would say 4-5 a day. I am bonifide again now on small business ads so feel free to contact em through there. Not best to put all your eggs in one basket though but if you do get a stack of bg you could easily sell em at the bogof price!

Willowwisp · 20/01/2008 20:07

Nataz66 - I got the V2's as they were such a good bargain! Not sure about the V3's but the V2's do the trick for us, so easy and cute!

I use about 6-7 a day and I bought 20 so always have plenty. I haven't had one stain yet and I wash them on a 60 quick wash (50 mins), tumble dry for about 40 mins and they come up a treat!

Nataz26 · 20/01/2008 20:09

Am guessing your lo is still little, but do they fit under clothes ok?

OP posts:
hotbot · 20/01/2008 20:18

another vote for bumgenius here, dry fast, also tumbledryerble if desperate, tho dry overnight on the airer, vedry slim fit under normal clothees ok, even dungerees for my dd
