Birth certificate amendment

Has anyone recently applied for an amendment to their child’s birth certificate? I was wondering what the amendment looks like when added to the margin of the original birth registration when reordering a birth certificate?

The registrar has added my birth surname (in space 9 on the birth certificate) and my deed poll surname (in space 9a) in 2 of my children's birth certificates, and when registering my latest child last week I was advised that this was done incorrectly and for the last birth registry (last week) the registrar only added my deed poll name in space 9 - which is the correct approach. They have offered to correct the other 2 birth certificates but I’m just wondering whether it is worth adding this correction and how the correction will be recorded, and whether it is something I should go ahead and do as not sure how I feel about it!

Any help would be much appreciated 🙏

if you order a full certificate of the corrected entry, the correction will show as a note at the side setting out what the correct name in the space should be. If you order a short certificate no correction will show.
I am sure the registrar will have given you the definition of a maiden name, which is recorded in space 9(a) and the name that should be in space 9(b).
To be honest some corrections can look a little messy, but it’s maybe worth thinking about the future if your children ever compare certificates and wonder why the information recorded differs.

Thanks for the reply. The registrar encouraged me to put my birth name in maiden name 9a and the deed poll name in space 9b and I have later discovered that this is wrong, which has also been confirmed by the registry office which I attended. So no, unfortunately she herself didn’t know the correct definition. I also think it will look messy so unsure of what to do now. Thanks

I’m a registrar. The correction will appear as a note at the bottom of the entry, the body of the entry will remain the same. I’m not quite sure what that registrar was up to as 9a should be the maiden name - which is the surname you used when entering into your first marriage, regardless of whether it’s your birth name or deed poll name. Box 9b only comes into play if the mother has been married more than once. If you had a deed poll name in 9a and wanted your birth name on the entry as well it would be shown as a ‘formerly known as’ name next to the name you’re known by and using at the time of the birth.

Thanks so much for the reply. It seems unfair that I have to apply for a corrective note to be added as the information supplied to the registrar at the time was correct, but entered incorrectly due to no fault of my own. In checking the accuracy of the registration before signing I relied upon the knowledge of the registrar to know the limitations of space 9a and 9b after providing the correct information. Do you think there is a way I could have this corrected without a marginal note, considering the information supplied at the point of registration was correct?

also, as a registrar how common / often do you see this type of correction being made? Do you think a marginal note looks ‘messy’ ie is this something you would correct? Note, I have not been married before.

Thanks
