Shoes for walking baby - foot&budget friendly?

My daughter's nearly 11 months old but has been walking since 9.5 months! I've been putting off buying her first pair of shoes because I wasn't expecting it this so soon but now she literally cries in the park because I won't let her run around😭
I've looked up baby shoes and I have no idea what's good for their feet and they all cost a fortune even though they'll be outgrown so soon!
Does anyone have any recommendations or no what to look for?

I had no idea what topic to post this in, so I'm hoping for the best here😂

I bought a foot measuring thing, then looked up pre-owned but never worn shoes on vinted or ebay. Usually clarks for the tiny sizes, but M&S or start right are also good. As they grow so fast at that age, a fair amount of people get caught out buying shoes that never get used before they're outgrown.

I would go and get their feet measured in Clarks or wherever to make sure you start off at the right size then buy shoes somewhere else.

Easier if their feet are standard width, but more tricky if they are wide or narrow. Next, M&S and Asda/Sainsburys I've found to be pretty good.

We now have a foot gauge at home we brought from Amazon to measure every now and again.

Start rite always do a great online sale. Either take her to Clark’s to get measured it even places like next measure too now.

George at asda shoes are great for first walkers

Okay, just a follow up question sorry, she's got shoes but obviously hasn't quite got the hang of them yet😂 It's quite funny watching her trying to walk about in them but I was wondering how long it might take her to get used to them?

It took my DS a couple of weeks to get used to them, he kept tripping over his own feet.
If she really can’t get to grips with them they might be a bit too big?

lemons123 · 01/08/2022 12:38

@SalviaOfficinalis I was wondering if they might be too big... She measured a 3 but they said to size up so that she can grow into them, do you reckon I should get a 3 so she can practise walking in some that already fit better?

If they feel really big then might be worth getting a smaller size.
Could you try some sandals maybe? It’s easier to see if they’re too big and you can adjust the straps more.

CrotchetyQuaver · 01/08/2022 15:38

I would take her to somewhere like Clark's, John Lewis or anywhere else that has a proper childrens shoe department with trained fitters and go with what they think is the best fit

SBAM · 01/08/2022 15:41

@lemons123 was this in clarks? Because if she’s measuring as 3 in clarks I think that they already allow room for the foot to grow when they tell you the size, so if you’ve got her in a 3.5 or 4 they’ll be big enough to trip her up.

ItsSnowJokes · 01/08/2022 15:44

What trained shoe person told you to size up so they last longer? They need to fit properly so they are comfortable for the child to wear. Clarks build in growing room when they measure already so I can't imagine them saying size up.

Imagine you are a 6 but someone said wear a 7 they wouldn't feel comfy, they would slip in places etc...... it is even more important that this doesn't happen with growing feet and children's soft bones.

lemons123 · 01/08/2022 15:48

@SBAM It was in Shuh that she measured as a 3.. I think size 4 might've been a big jump so I'm tempted to buy a 3 and see how she gets on with them but I could pop into Clarks and maybe get her remeasured?🤔

@ItsSnowJokes Yeah I think you're right, it must feel pretty uncomfortable when the first pair of shoes you try to walk in are too big😭

Go to Clarks or Startrite and get her properly measured. You don't want to mess about with children's feet. Keep baby barefoot as much as possible and only use shoes for outside walking. Asda first walkers are great and barefoot friendly but you need to be properly measured so you get the right size. Most shoes off the shelf are an F width fitting. If your child is smaller or wider than this get the proper width size for them this is also very important.

lemons123 · 01/08/2022 16:16

@ItsSnowJokes Thank you! I'll get her remeasured in Clarks. She's been walking barefoot indoors for ages now but she wants to go running outside now😭

Alternatively you could try juicy bumbles or dotty fish (both on Amazon) they’re softer, more like leather slippers and might help her get used to the sensation of shoes before having some that are less flexible on the sole.

Dobbysgotthesocks · 01/08/2022 16:42

Would something like this help? Softer like socks by with something of a sole?

Clarks and start rite sale have shoes under £20.

AegonT · 01/08/2022 20:28

They should fit the shoes in the shop and check they walk well in them so they should be able to walk in them straight away. The should have the size they measure at. There is a sale on in Clarks at the moment.
