Gagging on dummies

My little girl is 10wks. For the first 8wks she took a MAM dummy quite happily but recently has been refusing them and gags if I offer it to her. I’ve tried buying new ones of the same style and also other brands in the meantime to see if she likes them but she refuses/gags with these too.

Anyone else?

If she doesn't want one, is there a reason you're trying to force the issue?

FTM2022x · 29/07/2022 07:10

only because when she’s tired she tries to suck something, whether that’s her hands or my tshirt etc. she sleeps swaddled so she obviously can’t suck her hands and her dummy used to help her drift off

That's very normal, babies want to be on the breast, have you tried latching her on to give her that comfort to drift off?

Ridiculous assumption that the child is breastfed but ok. Ignoring your comment entirely.

OP - sometimes babies just decide that they no longer want the dummy, you can keep trying to persevere but other than that there's not a lot you can do to "force" her to take a dummy if she doesn't want it. My kids always slept with muslins as comforters as they're completely breathable, they used to suckle on them in place of a dummy. Other than keep trying to encourage it, it may just be time to let the dummy go.
Probably a blessing in disguise, getting rid of the dummy is a pain in the arse when they're older!

@wibblywobblybits can I ask if you managed to get rid of the muslins? My boy is nearly 4 and cant sleep without sucking a label.

She'll be out of the swaddle semi soon anyway but maybe in the meantime you could try something different? I quite liked the love to dream swaddle sacks for this reason - gave the right swaddled feeling but with arms up position so although her hands would be in the sack can still bring them to her mouth to suck?

Either that or maybe just need to trial lots of different dummies as at 10 weeks she just might need or like a different shape?

My ds hated his arms being swaddled right from the start, so we always left them out. Might be an idea .

They're 1 and 3 and still have them! To be honest I haven't even considered when they'll get rid of them, they're just the same as sleeping with a teddy bear really just a lot more convenient as they don't care which muslin they sleep with, so we have about 50 on rotation and they can be washed and taken on holiday without fear of losing them. I'll probably just keep them until they say they no longer want them

@wibblywobblybits statistically around half of all babies in the UK are BF at that age, so not a ridiculous assumption at all, though I accept that I should have clarified if baby is BF or FF first. I was typing with my own tiny baby latched on so got tunnel vision I suppose.
