Is my baby going to be big? 12 days old & constantly eating

She was born 7 lbs 7 oz, her feeding was really infrequent and she didn’t take much, so within 4 days she dropped to 6 lb 14 oz. The hospital was concerned about this and they admitted her due to suspected infection, but all came back negative.
she got discharged and she started eating better. She’s now 12 days old, and she surpassed her birth weight 3 days ago when the midwife weighed her, she was apparently 7 lbs 10 oz. Yesterday, she was weighed by the health visitor who said she was 7 lbs 15 oz.
she is visibly much chubbier and she cries for a feeding every 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours. She eats 40ml when sleepy but she has about 90ml per feeding. Is this a lot for a 12 day old?

Seriously your worry is that your 12 day old baby will be “big”?
Feeding every 2 hours or even less is totally normal for a baby that isn’t even 2 weeks old yet.

sasscass · 28/07/2022 21:27

@luxxlisbon um, when did I say that I was worried? Please tell me where I stated that. Because I didn’t.

I think the last question suggested that this wasn’t just idol speculation…

but no, your baby is 12 days old. Feed on demand. It’s not an issue.

She's got a stomach the size of a marble. Feeding every 1.5-2 hours at 12 days old is perfectly normal.

sasscass · 28/07/2022 21:32

@PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister i get that but I’m far from worried. I’d rather her be on the bigger side than be as thin as she was at 4 days old. Which was a concern of mine.
the health visitor said that she has caught up unusually quick considering the circumstances and that she seems big.

@Blueuggboots I know the frequency is normal, but I was wondering about the amount. The hospital told us to feed her 40ml every 2 hours but she takes 90ml every 2 hours.
id much rather her be on the bigger side than be as thin as she was on day 4, because it was extremely worrying. We were told that her stomach isn’t big enough to even hold 90ml so I was wondering where it was all going lol.

What's happening is completely normal. DS wasn't that normal, born at 7lb 5oz, albeit three weeks early. Lost shedloads in the first 10 days. First time I took him for a weigh he had gained 17oz - in a week. Was quite chubby at 4 months, then got bronchiolitis, then started moving.

He's nearly 28, played front row since age 11. Not an ounce of fat on him. About 5'11".

They will be what they will be. Feed them well, love them well, exercise them well, educate them well.

sasscass · 28/07/2022 21:37

That’s good to hear.
the health visitor worried me with how she responded, that’s why I asked this question. I was told that 90ml is too much but I just feed her as often and as much as she demands until she’s satisfied. But her rapid weight loss really upset me and I’d rather her be on the bigger side because at least I know she has enough storage to grow into.

First rule if motherhood @sasscass - pay no attention at all to health visitors. They can read the leaflets you know. As can you, probably faster 😀. Doesn't mean they understand the leaflet.

If your baby wants feeding and is happy having that volume, keep doing it.

Take the HV with a pinch of salt...one last week told me my 8 month old shouldn't be having milk anymore! They all have different opinions and from my experience they sprout rubbish and get you worried.

When older some babies will have 6 or 7 oz every 4 hours, others will have 3 or 4 oz every 2 hours - it's all right. It's just what works for your baby.

My baby boy was 5lb 3oz when he was born and dropped to 4lb 8oz by day 5 due to jaundice and me having a very low milk supply after a traumatic EMCS. We went into hospital for phototherapy for jaundice (which was so bad they gave him a feeding tube so they wouldn't have to stop therapy whole he fed!) And started to give him formula top ups...he then gained at least 1lb per week for the next 3 weeks!

So I wouldn't worry about quick weight gain, the HV was really happy with his weight gain and said to keep feeding on demand and as much as he wants as babies haven't worked out how to eat for pleasure yet so won't have much if not hungry.

At 7 weeks he's now 10lb 4oz and lovely and chubby, we're mostly formula feeding now as my milk supply never improved. I do one breast feed with him in the evening every day but only because I enjoy the bonding time and he's not rejected me for the bottle yet! Enjoy your baby ❤️

This.

Now a 12 day old baby will be put on a diet because otherwise she will be "big" 😂😂

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 01/08/2022 11:59

This is one of the downsides of bottle feeding, its too easy as a parent to become anxious about the volume your baby feeds instead of just sticking them on a boob and letting them get on with it. Providing they have lots of wet and dirty nappies and you aren't forcing it then it sounds like you are doing a great job. The frequency and volume of how much your baby feeds will change massively over the next few months, sometimes they are thirst or hot and drink more, sometimes their mouth hurt from teething so drink less but make up for it later, sometimes they are due a growth spurt so feed lots in order to 'stock up'. Enjoy your lovely new baby.
