When do babies get happier?

I have an 11 week old DS and he's lovely, but a lot of the time I feel like he isn't very happy. He feeds well and gets plenty of cuddles and playtime and I try to make sure he gets enough naps during the day, although sometimes he'll only go down for 15 minutes at a time.

He still cries quite a lot though and doesn't smile too often. I'm just worried that he's not happy and I'm missing something that I should be doing with him, he has some toys but he can't properly hold things yet so I don't think he gets much out of them.

I also thought that now that he's bigger he does always look like he's keener to move around by himself but just can't do it yet, he's rolled a couple of times but hasn't mastered it at all yet.

Do babies generally get more happier when they can move by themselves and interact with toys better?

It's making me feel like a bad mother, just hoping he'll be more content soon, although I hate to wish the time away.

I worried about this a lot when my son was small. I always thought he was bored. I think I'd been watching too many of those adorable giggling baby videos on YouTube... He just wasn't that kind of baby! He livened up a lot once he could get around and now he's a toddler he's hilarious. No need to stress about it, small babies just don't do much but they are taking everything in!

The loveliest, happiest, smiliest, sweetest baby I know cried non stop for the first 12 weeks. He was an absolute monster and his parents were at breaking point. Then one day he just stopped, just like that. Now he's about 8 months and an absolute delight, a dream baby. Far more placid than mine ever was! He's happy to just roll around playing with toys by himself while his older brother causes mayhem. So hang in there, it may be all about to change!

Sounds like he might be quite tired. Have you tried letting him sleep in a sling for his naps to see if he can get a longer rest time?

My eldest cried non stop for about 16 weeks. He had reflux. Make sure you rule out any problems.

Thank you everyone for the replies.

He has reflux and is on medication for it so he's a lot better now with that.

I think he could maybe do with having more sleep as he seems to be happier at the start of the day, but he just doesn't seem to want to nap more than he does.

Hoping he will become a happier baby as he grows then like others have, I'll just look forward to that. Its just hard not to worry about him, just want the best for my little boy.

My daughter had silent reflux and was miserable for the first 3 months. She got gradually better and then relatively content from when she could sit up at 6 months.

She's 3 years old now and very sparky but not especially smiley/giggly, so I'm sure a lot of it was just personality.
