Hi all I need advice. My lo is almost 1 and we cannot get him to wear shoes for love nor money 😭 he must not like the feeling of them on his feet, he legit cries so much until he’s going purple holding his breath until we eventually take them off. We have tried to persevere but he just cries and cries until they’re off again. It’s really distressing me as we go to Turkey in 2 weeks and I want him to have shoes on at the pool etc as he’s started walking - not to mention he’s also starting nursery soon 😭 any help would be great Tia xx

Have you tried a few different styles? Try on in shop and they can walk around? At 1, the first walkers are what you need which aren't 'proper shoes' they are much softer.

My DS was like this (now 18 months) but he now loves his shoes and actually even throws them at me normally by 7 in the morning because he wants to go out and be social😂

He cried so much at first when we started putting shoes on him and would try to pull them off all the time.

We persevered and tried to teach him that when he wears shoes he can be free to roam around outside the house - which he always wanted to do. I would also say to him 'Socks on, shoes on' everytime we went out and now when I say it, he goes and gets his socks and shoes from the rack and stands by the step waiting for me to put them on for him. He even helps me by pulling the velcro open too.

As PP also says, make sure the shoes are comfy for your little one and really all you can do is persevere with it. They will get used to the shoes eventually 😊

It's a common issue. A lot of young children find it really difficult to begin with when they start wearing shoes as it can feel really unnatural. The best thing to do is to buy a good pair of first walkers from a reputable brand such as Clarks. I'd recommend going to a shop and having his feet professionally measured and the shoes fitted so that he is as comfortable as possible in his new shoes. I'd also recommend having his feet remeasured every 8 weeks or so as kids' feet can grow very quickly. Good leather shoes will soften with wear but if you find that he is uneasy in them to begin with then just start with him wearing them for short periods.
