11-month-old sick in night but not ill

Hi all,

I wonder if anyone's experienced anything similar, and if so what caused it in your situation? My 11-month-old DD was sick at some point in the night two nights ago, but totally silently (her cot is right next to our bed and neither DH nor I noticed, and we're both sleeping very lightly atm and constantly waking up to check on her just as standard) and she obviously then went straight back to sleep, as we only knew about it when she woke for the morning at 5.45 (her standard wake up time) and DH passed her to me for a feed and said "there's sick in her hair and on the cot sheets".

I feel dreadful about it - poor thing must've been sleeping in sick for a few hours - but genuinely she made no sounds of distress (or any noise at all for that matter) as if she had we'd have woken instantly and been straight on it.

She was absolutely fine and her usual self for the day yesterday (no temperature, mood the same as usual, keen to play, etc) and hasn't been sick again since so I can only assume it wasn't any sort of bug and perhaps something like overeating (she did eat quite a big dinner, albeit it was many hours before the sick incident). Has anyone else's baby had a similar experience, and do you know what caused it? Obviously I'm keen to avoid it happening again if I can, so if it's overeating maybe I need to try to make her portions smaller (though if anything she seems to want to eat more and more so I don't think she'd be happy about that!).

Thanks in advance for any experiences to share.

My son did this once although he was slightly older. I think he must just have coughed or had something stuck in his throat while he was sleeping which caused it. It's very disconcerting!

My 2yo has done this at least once that I can remember. He is almost immediately sick if he gets a hair in his mouth so I pretty much assumed it was that, or a cough that got a bit stuck, or even possibly just a stomach bug they’ve fought off well.

In my experience kids are great at not over eating if they’re baby led at their own meal times, totally each to their own but I never tend to restrict food. They’re also good and telling us when they’re distressed so the chances are she probably wasn’t that upset when she was sick and just wanted to go back to sleep.

Just keep an eye on her but I’d be inclined to jot it down as one of the many things toddlers do that make little sense :)

Thanks @mynameiscalypso and @Pen89ox - really reassuring to know it's not just us, though sorry it happened to you too. "One of the many things toddlers do that make little sense" certainly rings true on many things...😂.

I'll keep a close eye on her and cross my fingers that it doesn't happen again. She does have a cough atm so maybe it was that after all (though she's had a cough for days and been okay so far).

My kid is 3.5 and STILL pukes a fair amount if she has a cough at night 🤦🏼‍♀️
