hello, my little ones starting preschool in September.
currently sleep hasn’t been great, just wondered if anyone has had similar & will get better once they start ? At the moment has no naps, wake up between 5.45am - 6 am & bed is circa 7.30 pm. Tried earlier / later bed but always wakes up same time the next day. Thx

How old are they? They they plenty of exercise? What does bedtime look like?

Pcr2005 · 26/07/2022 07:03

She’s 3, out most days for part of the day. She is tired for bed falls asleep usually within 5-10 minutes, sometimes will wake during the night but not often or if unwell etc.

That doesn’t sound like terrible sleep - the NHS says that three year olds need 8-12 hs sleep a night, so she’s roughly in the middle of that.

if she’s tired, can you move bedtime earlier? It might well not make her wake earlier.

In what way is the sleep terrible?

Garman · 26/07/2022 07:20

That sounds like excellent sleep.

Buttons0522 · 26/07/2022 07:34

Seems like pretty normal sleep to me, some are just early birds (mine are!) put them to bed earlier so you get more of an evening!

fromcitytocountry · 26/07/2022 07:41

Your toddler's sleep is completely normal. Stop trying to change them and be glad they're getting a solid block.

My 3 year old goes up to bed for 7 and is asleep around 7.30. he then wakes between 5-6.30 (typically more 6 unless it's really warm or overly sunny then it's earlier)

EcoCustard · 26/07/2022 07:41

Sounds fine to me. Ds3 is awake anytime between 6am-7am weekdays and goes to bed about 7.30pm. Falls asleep as soon as his head hits the pillow. He doesn’t nap, hasn’t since about 12 months. He does like a lie in at the weekend and some days after nursery likes a slightly earlier bedtime of about 6.30-7pm if very tired. If tired after preschool move bedtime a little earlier in those first weeks.

Sleeping straight through from 7.30-6am is good sleep. What would you want to be different?

LetItGoHome · 26/07/2022 07:46

She is sleeping a solid 10 hours over night. That sounds like a win to me!
The early mornings of small children is hard.

Classicblunder · 26/07/2022 07:48

That sounds like pretty good sleeping if no wake ups

Beees · 26/07/2022 07:51

This sounds like the gold standard for sleep to be honest so not sure why you think it's poor sleep.

When she starts in September she will probably be more tired for a while which will likely happen again when she starts Reception, but it won't last long.

Stevienickssnickers · 26/07/2022 07:52

Unless you're up multiple times per night, I'd say that's pretty good. It's light in the mornings at the moment so by autumn you might see a later start.

Have you tried a gro clock?

FizzyLizt · 26/07/2022 08:06

That sounds great to me haha. My 2 year old doesn't even sleep through the night and is up at 5...

Hugasauras · 26/07/2022 08:15

You have to have a trade-off with young kids. You can't have whole evenings to yourself and a late start - you have to pick one. At the moment you've got all evening - you can sacrifice some of that to try get a later start, it just depends what you value more!

Confusedteatowel · 26/07/2022 08:40

If she doesn't wake up that sounds like great sleep!

Might get even better starting preschool
