Family of 4, how many online food shops do you do a week?

We have been doing one a week, but it never lasts and always find stuff just doesn't feel as fresh towards the end of the week. Thinking of implementing a new twice weekly smaller shop routine. Anyone else do this and how does it work out for you?

We will also pop to M&S or somewhere nicer for weekend treats, but I'm thinking of a couple of weekly smaller online food deliveries

We do one a week and a top up mid week.

Firesidefox · 25/07/2022 19:04

One Ocado a week and then a couple of trips to Lidl

flowerycurtain · 25/07/2022 19:14

Once a week. Eat the fresh stuff as it arrives. More frozen/tinned stuff towards the end. I've tried twice a week but ended up spending an awful lot
more. Also trying to simplify my life and having two deliveries was not helping that!!

One big shop per week.

Either a trip to Sainsbury's or an Ocado zoom mid-week to top up fruit/milk/anything we forgot in the big shop.

MercuryOnTheRise · 25/07/2022 19:19

About two a month, largely for the heavy stuff: water, detergent, tins, bathroom stuff, cat food, beer, tonic, soft drinks, pasta, oils, bread, milk, tea, coffee, cereal, usually 4/5 meals with each delivery. I like to buy fresh stuff in person and go once a week for that. I find supermarket salad, fruit and veg keeps easily for a week. Market stuff is half the price bills has half the life.

PeacefulInTheDeep · 25/07/2022 19:19

One a week. We meal plan, know how much of regular items we use and rarely run out of anything. The dinners at the end of the week are usually from frozen or store cupboard items, which means they can be easily "bumped" if weekend plans change.

We'll occasionally do an extra weekend order if we're having a BBQ or having dinner guests etc, just so that we have fresh bread/salad/whatever's needed.

KarrotKake · 25/07/2022 19:21

Don't do online.
But one big shop a week. And one top up in the middle for bread, and anything we're running short of.

Depending on where the shop is, it might be quicker to pop into store for the small shop rather than wait around for an hour for a times slot?

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 25/07/2022 19:22

One a week. I plan very well.

moreteensthansense · 25/07/2022 19:22

I reckon I do three a fortnight. The weekly shop just doesn’t work for me whereas I can happily plan 4 days ahead.

Schooldil3ma · 25/07/2022 19:24

I have a delivery every 4 or 5 days. Negates the top up shops, always have fresh stuff in, and never have to meal plan more than 4 days, amazing.

VerveClique · 25/07/2022 19:27

Two a week!!

Brilliant for meal planning and fresh food. I still write a list and then just go through and select all of the items I need.

We have a delivery saver plan and it’s £40 minimum. Sometimes I don’t spend much more than that. I also buy household items and occasionally alcohol, and would definitely spend at least £80 a week elsewhere.

Save a fortune… no milkman, top up shops, hardly any eating out or takeaways and no middle aisle of doom! Hardly any food waste either.

It feels frivolous but it’s absolutely not.

Absolute game-changer.

MajorCarolDanvers · 25/07/2022 19:29

Once a week with the odd top up is usually enough.

shiningstar2 · 25/07/2022 19:32

In general we do two a month for all the heavy stuff then go in to shop weekly for fresh things. lately though I have done a weekly for delivery because I hate food shopping and getting lazy about ot. In I do find though that once s week is enough for fresh food shopping. In I am finding that now I've been doing online once s week I end up freezing more, especially meat, chicken and fish I think I need to stop the online orders for a while and start using what is in the freezer. Then I can go back to actually using most fresh stuff when it is d bought.

gogohmm · 25/07/2022 19:34

One of the reasons I don't do online - I go in person 2-3 times a week, dp once and we get a Gousto box sometimes

stormelf · 25/07/2022 19:35

Family of 5 (1 baby so only need milk for her) I get one online shop a week and then go to local co op if I need a top up of fresh ingredients, often for tuesday and wednesday lunches, we get our delivery on Wednesday

MeridianGrey · 25/07/2022 19:49

I do twice a week, I find it much easier to plan meals and use everything up if I’m not cramming the fridge full. As someone said above I can easily spend the £40 minimum and with delivery saver it isn’t more expensive.

toooldtocarewhoknows · 25/07/2022 19:50

One every five days. I used to spend £60 but recently it's coming out at about £80!

Mommabear20 · 25/07/2022 19:51

1 BIG shop per month to stock up on tins and cleaning stuff, as well as nappies and dog food. Then 1 food order per week

Chocohlate · 25/07/2022 19:51

Midweek Asda and Aldi at the weekend.

Aldi is getting much more expensive I’m finding so I might switch to 2 Asda’s, I already pay for delivery pass.

feellikezerobucks · 25/07/2022 20:00

I do 2 a week, 1 delivered Monday morning and 1 delivered Friday morning, so no need to plan for more than 4 days and you can have fresh stuff/treats for the weekend.
Works in this house and got the tip off MN!

Jacky86 · 25/07/2022 20:06

One big weekly shop for 5 people. Meal planning is very important. We never run out or need anything.

Wellthatsjustswell · 25/07/2022 20:08

One big shop, trip to local shop for extra milk & maybe a bag of salad towards the end of the week.

Do you do a weekly menu/meal plan?

carefullycourageous · 25/07/2022 20:10

I'd say switch your fresh food to a greengrocer delivery or shop. I think their stuff is better. I get a veg delivery once a week, it is fine for over the week.

Mydogatemypurse · 25/07/2022 20:11

One a month... About £80. Then £25 a week on fresh.

user1497787065 · 25/07/2022 21:18

I meal plan meticulously and do a weekly shop at the supermarket and butcher and usually pick up more milk midweek (don't really want 16 pints in the fridge in one go.
