21MO just inhaled crisp chocked and vomited so worried and upset

Advice please

I’ve been in tears since it happened never been so scared in my life. My daughter had a tantrum whilst eating hard toddler crisps (kiddylicious veggie straws) and as she started crying she must have sucked a crunched up part of one back.

She completely went silent and red in the face and couldn’t breathe or make any noise for about 20 seconds. it felt like a lifetime. I had her over my shoulder tapping her back the fear in her eyes was terrifying I have been shaking and so upset since. She then vomited about 3 times and had a coughing fit and was finding It hard to catch her breath. She’s been on my lap cuddling me since it happened she must be traumatised from it.

I am so worried she could have inhaled it into her lungs. Do I contact the doctor what do I look out for ? I feel sick I have to go to work this evening and don’t want to leave her now. Is there a big chance she could have aspirated this?

She's probably fine but get her checked if you want, and do a paediatric first aid course or Google it because over your shoulder is not a useful way to deal with a choking child.

Bless you. That happened to my daughter with a goodies bar and it was terrifying.

We were in Costa and a nurse helped us and told us only to go to hospital if she continued to cough or clear her throat. Or if we had other concerns. My DD was back to normal, and asking for food 😬😬 within ten mins so I didn’t. I think you might feel better if you phone for advice though. It’s so scary.

Happed with ds while eating a plum, it’s terrifying but whole agree with above - get booked onto a child fist aid course, it’s not patting her back that’s needed but hard whacks sadly.

ds is 6 now and was 4 when it happened and he won’t eat without someone around him, they go so silent and it’s so scary. Take some time to process it yourself too

It's so so scary! As previous poster says, if she has a continuing cough or becomes unwell with fever later then get checked but there's not much anyone could do until then if she had inhaled some.

Also, I don't want to be mean, but I would refresh your first aid knowledge too. You should have put her over your knee, and slapped her back hard not just tapping and not over the shoulder. Just for your own piece of mind.

Yep proper back blows if it happens again. Then abdominal thrusts. And cycle between.

There's a great app the Red Cross have for free that's all sorts of first aid advice for children. It's called Baby and child first aid on App Store.

Awww, that must have been so scary! One of my little ones choked once - on an apple, thinly sliced and peeled! These things do happen. I agree with the others about a first aid course, definitely! It'll give you the confidence to know what to do going forward. Also maybe have a rule about only eating when sitting down.

Watch this video. It's really helpful.

Thank you for your replies ladies.

@Chocohlate it’s so scary I can’t get her face from my mind😭 did she inhale it? My worry is that I actually heard her inhale it when she breathed in from crying I’m petrified she’s going to get pneumonia or something now

Watch this video. It's really helpful.

This is really good for babies but if your child is over 1 it needs a different approach. Under one's this video is really helpful.

Also it's worth downloading the Red Cross app OP or book yourself into a first aid course.

From NHS website (student paramedic here)

1	Stand or kneel behind your child. ...
2	Clench your fist and place it between the navel and ribs.
3	Grasp this hand with your other hand and pull sharply inwards and upwards.
4	Repeat up to 5 times.
5	Make sure you don't apply pressure to the lower ribcage, as this may cause damage.

@Marie83x

She was sucking in sharply, I can still hear it now, the bar disintegrated, it didn’t come up, it went down once it had disintegrated enough. So I don’t really know. She went blue and started to pass out. It was horrendous. I really thought she was going to die.

Ten minutes later she was fine, I was still shaking! 2 years later she has no idea and goodies bars still give me flashbacks.

I really think a call to 101 would put your mind at ease. And perhaps let her sleep in with you tonight.

Apologies, maybe this one is better.
